Pixar’s standout summer hit “Inside Out 2” crossed the $1 billion milestone Sunday, the first film to gross 10 figures globally since “Barbie” last summer and the fastest an animated film has ever crossed the threshold.
KEY FACTS
“Inside Out 2” reportedly grossed another $57.4 million domestically over the weekend to bring its total gross to $1.014 billion worldwide as of Sunday, making it the 11th animated film to ever hit the mark and the fastest to do so in just 19 days.
The film has dominated the box office since it released three weeks ago, notching the best opening weekend of the year by far with a $155 million domestic gross and shattering second weekend records by grossing another $100 million in the U.S., the best-ever second weekend performance for an animated film.
No other movie has hit the $1 billion mark this year and only two did it last year—”Barbie” hit the milestone in 17 days and went on to have a lifetime gross of $1.4 billion and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” had $1.36 billion in total box office sales, hitting the 10-figure mark in 26 days.
The weekend box office was also kind to “A Quiet Place: Day One,” which grossed $53 million to top the opening weekends of its two franchise predecessors, and Kevin Costner’s ill-fated “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One” came in third with an estimated opening of $11 million.

WHAT WERE THE OTHER TOP MOVIES AT THE BOX OFFICE?
The weekend box office was also kind to “A Quiet Place: Day One,” which grossed $53 million to top the opening weekends of its two franchise predecessors, and Kevin Costner’s ill-fated “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” came in third with an estimated opening of $11 million. “Bad Boys 4” was the fourth-highest-grossing film with $10.3 million and “Kalki’ was fifth with just over $5 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
TANGENT
Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” has been watched closely by box office aficionados. The actor, who walked away from his hit show “Yellowstone” to make the film, reportedly put $38 million of his own money into the three-hour, Civil War-era western for a $100 million production budget total. Warners agreed to distribute and market “Horizon” for a fee in the U.S., according to The Hollywood Reporterr. The movie grossed barely a tenth of its budget in its first weekend and is one of the worst-reviewed movies of the year on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 39% approval rating. Costner, who both stars in and directs the film, has had the idea for the movie since the 1980s, he told Deadline, and started working on scripts for a four-part film series more than a decade ago.
SURPRISING FACT
“Inside Out 2” helped push the summer box office, which runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, to $1.4 billion domestically, a much-needed boost for a season that was slumping until the release of “Bad Boys” four weeks ago. That’s about 34.8% of the $4.03 billion reported at the box office last summer. This year’s box office draw isn’t expected to be quite as impressive for a number of reasons, including being the first summer without a Marvel film to kick off the season since 2009 and delays in production brought by last year’s actors and writers strikes.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
“Deadpool and Wolverine” is expected to fetch $350 million at the box office in its first four weeks domestically when it debuts later this summer, Variety reported, and “Despicable Me 4,” which comes out July 3, is also expected to give total box office sales a boost.
