12 trillion. That is how many minutes Americans spent streaming in 2024, according to Nielsen, which noted the figure equates to about 8.4 billion days or 23 million years. The figure marked a 10% increase from 2023.
Key Background
Streaming has become increasingly popular in the last five years. Streaming represented about 26% of Americans’ total time spent watching TV in May 2021, Nielsen reported, noting that number jumped to over 43% by Dec. 2024. The surge in streaming has managed to coincide with increasingly expensive streaming services that include Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video and others. Netflix is the most recent streaming service to announce a price hike, revealing this month it will increase its ad-supported tier from $6.99 to $7.99, its standard tier from $15.49 to $17.99 and its premium tier from $22.99 to $24.99. Crackdowns on password sharing across multiple streaming platforms have contributed to subscriber growth for multiple platforms including Netflix.
