First Female Speaker Of 45-Year-Old Parliament In Lagos

The 44-year-old legislator is the new political head of the parliament inaugurated on October 2, 1979.

“I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; that I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully, and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” says Meranda.

Mojisola Meranda has become the first female speaker of the 45-year-old parliament of Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos.

Meranda held various positions, including deputy speaker, and has now taken over the reins after the reported impeachment of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa.

The master’s degree holder in public and international affairs will preside over the 10th Assembly as its eighth speaker.

Her journey to this position began when she won the 2015 election to represent her constituency at the subnational parliament known as the Lagos State House of Assembly.
