
<p>It has been an exciting and rewarding debut year for South African singer, Tyla Seethal, best known as ‘Tyla’.</p>



<p>Her latest recognition on the global stage is a raft of historic awards and nominations.</p>



<p>On Sunday, in Manchester, United Kingdom, Tyla took home three MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMAs), making her the first African artist to win three EMAs in one night.</p>



<p>Tyla was one of the biggest wins of the night; American singers Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter who also won multiple EMAs last night.</p>



<p>The 22-year-old South African songtress was nominated in four categories and also took home an award for ‘The Best African Act’, a category in which she was up against Nigerian artists Asake and Ayra Starr along with South African musicians DBN Gogo, and TitoM &amp; Yuppe.</p>

<p>Tanzanian global artist Diamond Platnumz, who won in this category in 2023, was also nominated. Tyla also won the award for ‘Best Afrobeats’; her fellow nominees were other African music icons Burna Boy, Tems and Rema.</p>



<p>“I can’t believe it,” she said, accepting the prize from LL Cool J.</p>



<p>“Literally, all the nominees, they are insane. They have taken Afrobeats so far and I’m so honored to be winning this award… Afrobeats has opened so many doors for African music, so thank you so much to Afrobeats.”</p>



<p>Tyla also took home the award for ‘Best R&amp;B’, beating artists such as Usher and Victoria Monét.</p>



<p>“I&#8217;m just as shocked as you guys. Like, I don&#8217;t know what to do,” she said in her acceptance speech. “I know it&#8217;s just so hard to categorise my music. I literally mix so many different genres into one, but R&amp;B is a huge influence in my music, especially Aaliyah, she&#8217;s like one of my idols.”</p>

<p>She paid tribute to the late ‘Princess of R&amp;B’, Aaliyah, by wearing a replica of the Roberto Cavalli dress that the she wore at the 2000 MTV VMAs.</p>

<p>This has been a record year for the South African singer. In February, she made history when she took home her first Grammy award for ‘Best African Music Performance’ for her hit single <em>Water.</em></p>



<p>“I did not think I would win a Grammy at 22 years old,” she said as she accepted the award at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, United States.</p>

South African Singer Tyla Has Record-Breaking Year As She Makes History (Again) At MTV EMAs And Pays Tribute To R&B Legend

<p>When 12-year-old Alex Okosi convinced his parents to allow him to stay in the United States with his older brothers following a family holiday, they reluctantly agreed, hoping that their last born would quickly become homesick and return home, with his tail between his legs.</p>
<p>“We had gone on holiday to visit my older brothers who were living and studying in the US. At that point in time, sending your kids to go study in the States was the ‘in-thing’ in Nigeria among parents who could afford this privilege,” says Okosi.</p>
<p>It took only two years after he arrived in the US for Okosi to awaken to the realization that his parents would not be financially able to support his US education for very long.</p>
<p>“Being the last of seven children, my parents had basically put six people before me through school. In as much as my father had been an excellent provider, it was obvious that by the time I would need to go to university, he would have long retired by then,” he says.</p>
<p>At the age of 14, Okosi started playing junior high basketball, in the hope that he would excel at both the sport and the books enough to earn a basketball scholarship.</p>
<p>“I pushed myself to work extremely hard at both my studies and basketball. Even though it was obvious that I was a better student than I was an athlete, I managed to get the scholarship that paid my university tuition,” says Okosi.</p>
<p>Having excelled at his studies and sports, Okosi also managed to pack in numerous after-school jobs and internships that made it easy for MTV Networks, now Viacom, to hire him on a practical training basis after he had completed his economics degree.</p>
<p>“As an international student, getting a company to hire you after you complete your studies was a major feat. I joined MTV in New York knowing that I would only be there for a year, after which I would have to go back home to Nigeria, or apply for a work visa, hopefully sponsored by MTV,” says Okosi.</p>
<p>From the moment he walked in at the iconic music television channel, Okosi says he immediately dreamt of taking it to his home continent. To achieve this, Okosi resolved to work harder than everyone else, like he had been doing throughout his entire schooling career in America.</p>
<p>“After serving my practical training year in the New York branch of MTV, I was then moved to Los Angeles where I was to learn about all the other functions of the cable television network business,” he says.</p>
<p>After some time in Los Angeles, Okosi began studying for his MBA, but the idea of taking MTV to Africa was still very much alive, and circumstances were about to conspire in his favor.</p>
<p>“On a typical day at the office, I was called from my office to come meet the group CEO of MTV Networks at the time, where I was introduced by my boss to the big boss, as the star of the Los Angeles operation. I honestly expected that the compliments by the bosses were only for the purpose of boosting my morale and nothing beyond that,” recalls Okosi.</p>
<p>To his surprise, Okosi received a call from the head office summoning him to a lunch meeting with the group’s CEO he had met days before.</p>
<p>“I realized that this was going to be my one and only chance to table my big idea. It was going to be now or never. Even though I had a comfortable life, knowing that MTV was present everywhere else but in Africa really bothered me. There was music in our continent; there was youth culture just like everywhere else in the world. It just felt like Africa was the last frontier at that point because the business was everywhere but [in Africa],” says Okosi.</p>
<p>After that promising lunch meeting, Okosi was then sent to London to experience the launch of a new branch. This move was designed to test him.</p>
<p>“The idea was that I should go to the United Kingdom and start the process from scratch to see if by the end of it, I would still be interested in going ahead with my plan to launch in Africa. Above all the other requirements, the most important objective was that I had to make sure that the London branch was financially viable, a business that actually made money,” says Okosi.</p>
<p>After a successful run in London, his bid to launch the channel in Africa was given the final stamp of approval. This was in 2004 when Okosi started the journey back and forth between Johannesburg and London, where he was putting together a team that was to launch “MTV Base” in February 2005.</p>
<p>“Besides the challenges that came with setting up smaller supporting branches in Nigeria and other lesser-developed countries in Africa, after we had a successful launch of our African headquarters in Johannesburg, my team’s number one major challenge was getting quality content from African artists. Here we were, as a youth music channel, hoping to cater to a global youth who wanted to see both international and local material, but the majority of the local material—especially the music videos—was just not up to par with our requirements,” he says.</p>
<p>This new challenge gave birth to another of Okosi’s winning ideas: the MTV Talent Reps, a non-profit program which would see Okosi’s MTV team members go to musicians to train them on the basics of creating and shooting music videos that would be worthy of being aired on the channel and on other sister channels across the global MTV network.</p>
<p>“Our talent reps acted as the middlemen between the record labels, artists and us as a content carrier. How we, as a station, saw it, is that we needed good quality content to carry on our channel, so that we could attract viewers, so that we could in turn, attract advertising that would make us a financially-sound business that would ultimately be a successful business,” says Okosi.</p>
<p>After the initial teething problems expected from a project of this scale, today MTV Base is one of the predominant music industry players across the continent, reporting a double-digit financial growth year-on-year. Besides playing an important role in taking African music to the rest of the world, Okosi says one of his most rewarding experiences is seeing the company launch the careers of some of the continent’s most loved video jockeys.</p>
<p>“Seeing people—like Sizwe Dhlomo—come to us as presenters and go on to become business people, is something that makes me very happy,” says Okosi. As senior vice-president and managing director of Viacom International Media Networks Africa, Okosi has also spear-headed the launch of other global channels in Africa: Comedy Central, VH1, BET and Nickelodeon. And to think that it all began with a childhood holiday.</p>


King Of The Last Frontier

<h3>When did you realize that you wanted to be music artists?</h3>
<p>Peter: When we were young our music was about dancing, singing and imitating people. We left music to focus on other things such as football and went back by chance when our mother, who is a pastor, invited us to play in the church band. Later, we won a music competition. From this experience we realized that we could take our music to the next level. We formed P’Square and the rest is history.</p>
<h3>How did you go about living your dreams and starting your careers?</h3>
<p>Peter: There was a time when our music was not appealing to the audience. Our dad stopped paying our school fees. We kept doing music and we found ourselves paying the fees. This built us up to stand on our own. Though we were making money, we needed to find a way to save because the music industry is tough. We didn’t want to fail like many other musicians before us. We left Jos to make a name for us in the industry. We were on our own in Lagos with little support and that is why we needed to be careful about how we spent money. Success for us was because of our perseverance and being the best in what we do.</p>
<h3>What was the worst business decision you have taken and how did you overcome it?</h3>
<p>Paul: Four years ago, we did a concert in which we invited an international artist. However, the artist did not show up. We wanted to carry on with the show but we were concerned about the negative impression this could create. At this point crowds were coming through the gates. We did not know how to explain this problem to our audience. We came on stage and performed three songs and immediately announced that everybody with the tag should go to the bank where they bought it and collect their money back. We did that to protect our name because it is more important than the money. With a name you can still make money. But when you lose that name money won’t come. We turned a negative business decision into a positive one.</p>

<h3>What were the key challenges when you started your music career?</h3>
<p>Paul: Back then, the money for studio recording was a challenge. I remember when we did our first song—we asked for help from our mother, who paid for the release of our song. She was so impressed with our work that she paid for the release of another song. Unlike other parts of the world where there are avenues to showcase talent, in Africa there are very few places where record labels can spot talent. As an artist you have to put yourselves out there and hope that somebody will recognize and sign you. For us it never came. We decided to do it on our own. Today we are signing artists.</p>
<h3>Has piracy affected your music?</h3>
<p>Paul: It is affecting us but we are not complaining because we sell in large volumes—our latest album sold a million copies five days after release. As a record label we are affected because new artists cannot control distribution. Distributors pay our royalties upfront because in Nigeria there is no monitoring system. Piracy does not end with hard copies though—downloads on social media could be an advantage as well as a disadvantage. On the one hand they help us to gauge the popularity of our music but on the other this is used to pirate our music. We try as much as possible reduce the piracy risk.</p>
<h3>What does it take to be a successful musician in Nigeria and Africa?</h3>
<p>Peter: You have to be business-oriented. As a music artist you need to understand that music is not for life. It might be for life for the likes of Michael Jackson. If you are making money now you need to manage your revenue life in a way that you can survive without music in the future. For us, outside the music industry we are into the real estate business. We don’t buy to sell; we keep most of our property investments.</p>
<h3>Pirates suck blood from gangster turned gospel singer</h3>
<h3>How did a gangster end up making a living as a gospel singer?</h3>
<p>Now Kenya’s Owen Mwatia trying to stop hustlers and pirates from ruining his dream. When the fifth member of his gang was shot dead on the streets of Nairobi, Owen Mwatia—known on stage as Daddy Owen—decided enough was enough. In 2003, he put down the gun and picked up the Bible.</p>
<p>More than eight years on, Mwatia is an award winning gospel singer and one of East Africa’s best musicians. He scooped the Best East African Artiste Award at the 2011 African Gospel Music Awards in London. In 2010, Mwatia was the first gospel musician to win an MTV Africa Music Award.</p>
<p>Life in a gang was tough enough, now his newfound career is being mugged by piracy, poor distribution and new technology.</p>
<p>“The reason why piracy is widespread is because of poor distribution channels. The distributors in Kenya are not doing their work. If you want any type of music, it is readily available through the pirates than the distribution companies. Out of 10 people listening to your music only one has bought your album, or even zero because all 10 just copied from their friends.”</p>
<p>Inefficient management of intellectual property rights, piracy and one-sided contracts have left many East African artists struggling to earn a living. Contracts in Kenya are not dictated by artists. A telecommunication company takes up to 80% while the artist gets 20%.Mwatia is trying to fight back.</p>
<p>“I am doing a digital launch whereby it will be coming from Daddy Owen straight to your phone, your computer or any storage appliance. In between there’s no middle man there’s no distribution company, and it is easy for me to get my money directly from it [digital launch].”</p>
<p>A digital launch is a once-off, where an artist has to cash in because after the launch, music becomes available and can be transferred from one device to another.</p>
<p>Kenya is Africa’s gospel capital and you’ll even find it being played in night clubs. Gospel songs top the charts and play across all television and radio station. Gospel music events in Tanzania and Uganda are dominated by Kenyan artists.</p>
