<p>Sinwar, 62, has served as Hamas’ leader in Gaza since 2017 and was named the group’s overall leader in August after Ismail Haniyeh, the group’s political chief, was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/siladityaray/2024/07/31/hamas-political-chief-ismail-haniyeh-killed-in-iran-militant-group-blames-israel/">killed</a>&nbsp;in Iran—an attack Hamas blamed on Israel, which has not publicly acknowledged any involvement.</p>



<p>Senior Biden administration officials have believed that, if Sinwar was killed, Israel would end its conflict with Hamas,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/israel-iran-gaza-lebanon-10-17-24-intl-hnk/index.html" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">according</a>&nbsp;to CNN.</p>

<p>Sinwar was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/brianbushard/2024/10/17/who-is-yahya-sinwar-israeli-forces-close-in-on-prisoner-turned-hamas-leader/">born in Gaza</a>&nbsp;in the early 1960s and joined Hamas after the militant group was founded in 1987,&nbsp;<a href="https://ecfr.eu/special/mapping_palestinian_politics/yahya_sinwar/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">according</a>&nbsp;to the European Council on Foreign Relations think tank. He helped establish Hamas’ internal security force a year later, and was sentenced to life in prison that same year for plotting to kill two Israeli soldiers and for the deaths of four Palestinians he believed had collaborated with Israel. Sinwar was released by Israel in 2011 as part of a prisoner swap involving more than 1,000 Palestinians. The U.S.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-announces-terrorism-charges-against-senior-leaders-hamas" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">filed</a>&nbsp;terrorism charges against Sinwar in September, accusing him and other Hamas leadership officials of orchestrating the group’s attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Some of the dead also go uncounted because “what we’ve seen in Gaza is entire families just being wiped out,” so there is no one to report them dead, Emily Tripp, the director of Airwars, a watchdog group that tracks war casualties, told Nature.</p>

<p>Israeli officials said they rescued four hostages eight months after they were captured in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, a rescue mission that has resulted in the deaths of at least 125 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry.</p>

<p>His mother, Orit Meir, described her son as a “kid with so much love for life,” in a January interview with The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jpost.com/israel-hamas-war/article-783725" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Jerusalem Post</a>, calling him a “doting son, brother, uncle, and grandson” with an “infectious” love of music.</p>



<p><strong>Andrey Kozlov</strong>: A resident of the kibbutz of Rishon LeZion who had only recently moved to Israel, had been working as a security guard at the festival when he was taken by Hamas,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jpost.com/israel-hamas-war/article-805426" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">multiple</a>&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/06/08/israel-hamas-war-news-gaza-hostages/#author-box" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">outlets</a>&nbsp;reported.</p>



<p>He is originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, and was one of three Russian nationals captured in the Oct. 7 attack, along with Alexander Lobanov and Alexander Trufanov,&nbsp;<a href="https://mid.ru/en/foreign_policy/news/1926666/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">according to</a>&nbsp;the Russian Foreign Ministry.</p>



<p>Kozlov immigrated to Israel alone, lived with friends and “wanted to learn more about [Israel],”&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/bringhomenow/status/1721813761168638294" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">according to</a>&nbsp;hostage release organization Bring Them Home Now—his mother followed him from Russia after his capture in a bid for his release.</p>



<p><strong>Shlomi Ziv</strong>: An interior designer and wholesale distributor from northern Israel, Ziv had also been working as a security guard at the Nova music festival on Oct. 7.</p>



<p>According to his sister, Adi Kikozashvili, he was a fan of racing cars and historical films, and had only recently graduated to “fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming an interior designer,” she&nbsp;<a href="https://bringourpeoplehome.org/person/shlomi-ziv/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">told</a>&nbsp;Bring Our People Home.</p>

<p>More than 20,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, the enclave’s Hamas-run health ministry said in an update on Friday, as the United Nations Security Council once again delayed a vote on a resolution to allow desperately needed aid to enter the Palestinian territory.</p>

<p>On Thursday, a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wfp.org/news/gaza-grapples-catastrophic-hunger-new-report-predicts-famine-if-conflict-continues" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>&nbsp;released by a UN-backed body warned nearly a quarter of Gaza’s population faces imminent starvation while more than 90% of the population was facing a “crisis or worse” level of food insecurity.</p>

<p>The prisoners also include Marah Bakeer, 24, who was a 16-year-old high school student in occupied East Jerusalem when Israeli forces shot at and arrested her for allegedly trying to stab an Israeli officer, an accusation Bakeer and her family deny,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/25/family-celebrates-return-of-free-palestinian-prisoner-marah-bakeer" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Al Jazeera</a>&nbsp;reported.</p>



<p>The 39 are part of a list of 300 Palestinians Israel said it was considering releasing as part of its deal with Hamas—some on the list were held on minor charges like throwing stones (though some were held on charges as serious as attempted murder), less than a quarter of them were convicted of a crime and most were being held on remand while awaiting a trial, the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-67522703" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BBC</a> reported.</p>



<p>Other common offenses the prisoners have been accused of include threatening security officers, entering Israel illegally without a permit, supporting terrorism and associating with hostile or unknown organizations,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/24/who-were-the-palestinian-prisoners-israel-released-on-friday" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Al Jazeera</a>&nbsp;reported.</p>

<p><strong>South Africa&#8217;s National Assembly has voted in favor of suspending diplomatic relations with Israel, including closing its embassy, in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This significant political move reflects escalating tensions and calls for a ceasefire and peace negotiations.</strong></p>



<p>South Africa’s National Assembly voted yesterday to suspend diplomatic ties with Israel, as well as the closure of the Israeli embassy within the country, due to Israel’s continued war against Hamas in Palestine. The vote, which came hours after Israel recalled its ambassador to South Africa, passed with 248 votes in favor and 91 against. However, the vote is not binding unless enforced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.</p>



<p>The vote, initiated by opposition party Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and supported by the ruling African National Congress (ANC), called for a suspension of all diplomatic ties with Israel until a ceasefire is reached. Earlier this week during a virtual summit of the BRICS nations, chaired by President Ramaphosa, it issued a statement condemning attacks on civilians in Palestine.</p>



<p>The move was welcomed by the South African branch of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. “There is no role for diplomacy with a settler-colonial apartheid state that is guilty of genocide against a population that it occupies,” said SA BDS Coordinator Roshan Dadoo to FORBES AFRICA. “South Africa should not be having relations with a state that perpetrates war crimes with impunity, and treats the United Nations, international law, and the rest of the world with utter disdain.”</p>



<p>However, the National Assembly’s vote was not appreciated by all parties. The South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) condemned the vote as pointless in light of Israel’s withdrawal of its ambassador for consultations, and condemned the chanting of “from the river to the sea” by some members of parliament “a chant which calls for the destruction of the only Jewish state, makes a mockery of the ANC’s stated position of supporting a two-state solution,” said Professor Karen Milner of the SAJBD in a statement.</p>



<p>Both the Israeli ambassadors’ recall as well as the National Assembly vote indicate a further breakdown in diplomatic relations between Israel and South Africa, which has historically had strong political, historical, and ideological ties to Palestinians. According to the Israeli Defence Forces, at least two hostages held by Hamas, 65-year-old Yehudit Weiss and 19-year-old soldier&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-67414353" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Noa Marciano</a>, have been&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/brianbushard/2023/11/16/idf-says-israeli-hostage-found-dead-outside-gazas-al-shifa-hospital/?sh=77921f022526">found dead</a>. Weiss was discovered last week near Al-Shifa hospital, which has been a major battleground over the last week. <p>Israeli forces raided the Al-Shifa Hospital complex in Gaza—the enclave’s largest medical facility—early Wednesday, in what they described as a “precise and targeted operation” against Hamas, a day after UN officials raised alarm about the deteriorating conditions at the hospital.</p>

<p>The Israeli Defense Forces&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/IDF/status/1724579353193754958" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">called</a>&nbsp;the raid an “operational necessity” and said it is taking place “in a specified area” of the hospital based on intelligence.</p>



<p>The IDF said its raiding forces include medical teams and Arabic speakers and wants to ensure that “no harm is caused to the civilians being used by Hamas as human shields.”</p>



<p>The IDF also claims its raid on the hospital complex comes after a 12-hour warning to stop all military activities from the site was not heeded.</p>



<p>Thousands of civilians, patients, and doctors are believed to be sheltering at the hospital, which has been without power since the weekend, prompting a warning from the United Nations’ Humanitarian Affairs Office (OCHA) that several patients, including at least 36 babies, are facing a “heightened risk of death.”</p>



<p>The IDF said it has facilitated “wide-scale evacuations of the hospital,” however these claims have faced some&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-hamas-war-news-11-12-2023-20f5dcd135b7eb34238a7b25ce560d0c" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pushback</a>&nbsp;from health officials and people trapped inside the hospital, with Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry accusing Israel of effectively blockading the complex.</p>

<p>Israel has accused Hamas of operating a command post inside tunnel complexes underneath Al-Shifa and said it was using the hospital’s patients and doctors as human shields. Both Hamas and hospital authorities have denied these allegations. On Tuesday, White House National Security Spokesperson John Kirby <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/white-house-says-it-has-evidence-hamas-using-al-shifa-hospital-run-military-2023-11-14/#:~:text=%22We%20have%20information%20that%20confirms,reporters%20aboard%20Air%20Force%20One." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">told reporters</a> that U.S. officials had intelligence that aligned with Israel’s claims about Hamas using the hospital. Following the Israeli raid, Hamas issued a statement saying it holds Israel and President Joe Biden “fully responsible” for the operation. Hamas added that it viewed Kirby’s statement as a “green light” for Israeli forces to “commit more massacres against civilians.”</p>

On Tuesday, Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry&nbsp;<a href="https://reliefweb.int/report/occupied-palestinian-territory/hostilities-gaza-strip-and-israel-flash-update-39" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">claimed</a>&nbsp;40 patients died inside Al-Shifa on Tuesday and the hospital’s staff were trying to bury nearly 180 bodies in a mass grave inside the hospital complex. Doctors at the hospital have&nbsp;<a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2023/11/13/middleeast/gaza-babies-incubators-al-shifa-hospital-israel-intl-hnk/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warned</a>&nbsp;that the lives of dozens of premature babies were at risk as they had to be moved out of their incubators after the hospital lost power. The IDF has&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/IDF/status/1724315771340214353" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">offered</a>&nbsp;to send additional incubators to the hospital but it is unclear how they would be used without power.</p>
