<p>The film has dominated the box office since it released three weeks ago, notching the best&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/maryroeloffs/2024/06/16/inside-out-2s-155-million-opening-weekend-is-the-best-of-the-year-by-far/">opening weekend</a>&nbsp;of the year by far with a $155 million domestic gross and shattering&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/maryroeloffs/2024/06/23/inside-out-2-broken-records-box-office-million-second-weekend-barbie-super-mario/">second weekend records</a>&nbsp;by grossing another $100 million in the U.S., the best-ever second weekend performance for an animated film.</p>



<p>No other movie has hit the $1 billion mark this year and only two did it last yearâ€”&#8221;Barbie&#8221; hit the milestone in 17 days and went on to have a lifetime gross of $1.4 billion and &#8220;The Super Mario Bros. Movie&#8221; had $1.36 billion in total box office sales, hitting the 10-figure mark in 26 days.</p>



<p>The weekend box office was also kind to &#8220;A Quiet Place: Day One,&#8221; which grossed $53 million to top the opening weekends of its two franchise predecessors, and Kevin Costner&#8217;s ill-fated &#8220;Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One&#8221; came in third with an estimated opening of $11 million.</p>



<p>&#8220;Bad Boys 4&#8221; was the fourth highest-grossing film with $10.3 million and &#8220;Kalki,&#8221; a Hindi movie, was fifth with just over $5 million, according to the <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/inside-out-2-box-office-quiet-place-day-one-horizon-1235935761/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hollywood Reporter.</a></p>

Costner, who both stars in and directs the film, has had the idea for the movie since the 1980s,&nbsp;<a href="https://deadline.com/2023/05/francis-ford-coppola-kevin-costner-interview-megalopolis-horizon-1235359148/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">he told Deadline</a>, and started working on scripts for a four-part film series more than a decade ago.</p>

<p>&#8220;Inside Out 2&#8221; helped push the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/season/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">summer box office</a>, which runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, to $1.4 billion domestically, a much-needed boost for a season that was slumping until the release of &#8220;Bad Boys&#8221; four weeks ago. That&#8217;s about 34.8% of the $4.03 billion reported at the box office last summer. This year’s box office draw isn’t expected to be quite as impressive for a number of reasons, including being the first summer without a Marvel film to kick off the season since 2009 and delays in production brought by last year’s actors and writers strikes.</p>

<p>“Deadpool and Wolverine” is expected to fetch $350 million at the box office in its first four weeks domestically when it debuts later this summer,&nbsp;<a href="https://variety.com/vip/2024-summer-movies-likely-to-hit-fall-guy-couldnt-1235998198/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Variety reported,</a>&nbsp;and &#8220;Despicable Me 4,&#8221; which comes out July 3, is also expected to give total box office sales a boost.</p>
