This year’s Move Afrika Tour expands from East to West Africa, pioneering the music touring circuit for international artists, employing 90% local crews in Kigali and Lagos, generating economic investments to strengthen Africa’s healthcare systems.



Global Citizen’s Move Afrika tour has come to Lagos, Nigeria for the first time, with an evening of music and citizen-led advocacy, headlined by EGOT-winning, critically acclaimed, multiplatinum artist and producer John Legend. Move Afrika: Lagos was hosted by media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and featured performances by Simi and DJ Consequence, back dropped by creative work from local designers and artisans. This was the second instalment of Move Afrika, an initiative to pioneer the pan-African music touring circuit for international artists.



John Legend gave the sold out Lagos show an incredible headline performance, which featured some of his greatest hits, including Ordinary People, PDA, Green Light, All of Me and Refuge, where he was joined on stage by Simi.



“It’s been too long, I’ve missed you all,” he said. “We’re thankful to Global Citizen and Move Afrika for bringing us back here. We belong together, Lagos. I’m so happy we’re together tonight.”



Throughout the set, he wore outfits by local designers Eleven Sixteen and Orange Culture, as well as a backstage look by Emmy Kasbit. The backing vocalists also wore local designers Elexiay and Wanni Fuga.



“Adding a second location to the Move Afrika tour this year is a major step in the direction of establishing the pan-continental music touring circuit that both international and local artists will leverage for years to come. Launched in 2023, Move Afrika is a long-term effort to pioneer the international music touring circuit throughout the continent of Africa, with a dedicated focus on driving economic investment, expanding infrastructure and building local capacity within host cities, creating local jobs, generating skill training and youth entrepreneurship opportunities, and showcasing the best of African creative talent to the world.



Additionally, international advocacy organization Global Citizen is leveraging this year’s Move Afrika tour to drive a citizen-led advocacy campaign focused on strengthening health systems across Africa.



During pre-show activations in both Kigali and Lagos, where participants earned free show tickets, Global Citizen urged African nations to increase domestic health financing, prioritize primary care and sexual and reproductive health and rights, boost global investments in health resilience, and alleviate financial burdens on nations to strengthen public health.



This year, Move Afrika took groundbreaking steps by delivering world-class shows working with both local Nigerian and Rwandan crews. Move Afrika: Lagos was delivered with 90% local crew, and more than 95% local equipment, demonstrating Nigeria’s continent-leading role in delivering world class productions.



Local vendors who partnered with Global Citizen to make Move Afrika: Lagos possible included Sole Empire, Pro Audio Nigeria, ITMS Limited, Cytech World Communication, Equally Diverse Solutions Ltd., Massive Dynamics, Event Design Studio, IDCL NG, The Greenroom Nigeria and Purple Fire.



As the first stop on the tour just a few days ago in Rwanda, Move Afrika: Kigali increased its local crew from 75% in 2023 to 90% this year, significantly increased locally-sourced technical production, saw local crew members working alongside international technical teams to stage the show, and showcased Rwandan creative excellence through the work of local artisans, including members of the Nyamirambo Women’s Center, who crafted traditional Agaseke peace baskets to complete the dynamic set design.



In the lead up to the Move Afrika show, Global Citizen hosted the Stride for HER Rights Maternal Healthcare Walkathon, in partnership with the Lagos State Government, the Lagos Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Tourism, across Lagos’s iconic Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge. The walkathon saw thousands of Global Citizens, leaders from civil society and government representatives from across the region participate, including Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF), Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), Nigerian Solidarity Support Fund (NSSF), and HelpMum, with all groups calling for enhanced maternal and child healthcare services nationwide.

The advocacy event amplified awareness of the vital role of community health workers, calling for increased healthcare funding towards sexual reproductive health rights, and championing the need for equitable access to maternal and neonatal healthcare services across Nigeria. Those who completed the walk earned tickets to Move Afrika: Lagos.



Earlier in Kigali, over a thousand Rwandans joined Global Citizen for the Together for a Healthier Community initiative, focusing on women’s and youth health, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Rwanda Biomedical Center, Imbuto Foundation, and Kimisagara Youth Center.



The event featured a mobile health clinic offering free sexual and reproductive healthcare, education, and community activities to raise awareness and improve access to services. Local musician Plantini performed, and Dr Yvan Butera, the Rwandan Minister of State for Health, gave a keynote address. The initiative aimed to address healthcare access barriers like distance, cost, and lack of awareness. Participants who attended the day’s event had the chance to earn free tickets to Move Afrika: Kigali.



To coincide with Move Afrika: Lagos, the Music Economy Development Initiative (MEDI) was launched to bring together a diverse coalition with the goal of unlocking the economic potential of music across Africa and beyond. MEDI will serve as the definitive source of research and data, highlighting the global economic potential of music, while fostering partnerships that drive policy reform, investment, and collaboration.



The initiative’s launch coincided with the inaugural Music Policy Assembly in Lagos, Nigeria, taking place the day prior to the Move Afrika event. The assembly brought together experts from across the continent to discuss crucial topics such as copyright, live music, and investment. Additionally, the assembly hosted the unveiling of MEDI’s first position paper, ‘We Need Tracks Before We Have Trains,’ co-authored by former Chief Economist of Spotify, Will Page.

Move Afrika: Driving Economic Growth And More Through Africa’s Entertainment Scene

The South African National Petroleum Company (SANPC), a state-owned entity, has officially debuted, marking the beginning of a new chapter in South Africa’s energy transformation journey.



At the helm of the transformation at the South African National Petroleum Company (SANPC) is CEO Godfrey Moagi, recently named the only South African on the African Energy Chamber’s (AEC) ‘Top 40 Movers and Shakers to Watch in 2025’.



The AEC’s annual list celebrates leaders who exemplify innovation, strategic vision, and tangible impact in Africa’s energy sector. Moagi’s inclusion reflects his alignment with the AEC’s core pillars: energy security, investment mobilization, and local empowerment.



“The Top 40 list recognizes those driving Africa’s energy future through collaboration and transformative policies,” says NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC.



The SANPC’s debut at Africa Energy Week (AEW) 2024, held from November 4-8 in Cape Town, South Africa, marked the first leg of the company’s Investor Roadshow Program, where it presented its vision to stakeholders across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. The roadshow serves as a platform for forging strategic partnerships, promoting SANPC’s role in energy security, and positioning the company as a leader in Africa’s energy sector.

The SANPC merges three key historical entities in the industry: iGas, PetroSA, and the Strategic Fuel Fund (SFF). The merger, a strategic decision designed to unify and streamline South Africa’s energy resources, brings together vital infrastructure, expertise, and market opportunities under one roof.



Moagi stresses that the consolidation will eliminate inefficiencies, optimize ZAR1.5 billion ($81 million) in operational synergies, and unlock a ZAR95 billion ($5.15 billion) market opportunity critical for sustainable growth in an increasingly competitive global energy market.



At AEW 2024, the SANPC hosted a networking stakeholder breakfast session with Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, affirming the company’s mandate.



“SANPC represents a new era for South Africa&#8217;s energy landscape,” he said. “To improve operational efficiency within the Central Energy Fund (CEF) value chain and deliver shareholder value, we sought to minimize duplications that inhibit the group from being a catalyst to reigniting the South African economy.”



South Africa faces significant energy security threats due to reliance on imports and reduced refining capacity. With imports already covering 65% of refined fuel needs, a figure projected to cost the economy ZAR170 to ZAR174 billion ($9.2 to $9.4 billion) annually by 2025, SANPC is prioritizing local infrastructure to stabilize supply chains. The country’s refining capacity plummeted from 80% in 2010 to 35% in 2022, driven by aging infrastructure and underinvestment.



One of SANPC’s flagship projects under evaluation is the revitalization of the Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) refinery in Mossel Bay–a town in the Western Cape province–a legacy asset currently non-operational due to feedstock shortages. The company is also assessing opportunities to convert shuttered refineries like Sapref into integrated petrochemical hubs, aligning with global trends to diversify into chemicals and offset volatile fuel margins.



Guided by the SANPC Bill, which empowers the company to streamline regulations and centralize import controls, SANPC aims to reverse import dependency. The bill proposes tying fuel pricing to local refining costs, disincentivizing profit-driven import substitution by international oil companies.



Moagi’s regional vision aligns with the AEC’s emphasis on cross-border collaboration to address Africa’s energy deficits. At AEW 2024, he championed partnerships with Namibia in the shared Orange Basin, where joint development of offshore gas resources could benefit both nations.



“By working together, we can close SADC’s [Southern African Development Community] projected 70% refining deficit by 2030 and create a unified, resilient energy sector,” Moagi remarked.



Globally, SANPC is leveraging partnerships with industry leaders like Petrobras to harness deepwater expertise while adhering to the AEC’s call for local capacity-building.



“We look to Petrobras’s approach as a model for how we can harness South Africa’s offshore resources, especially in the Orange Basin,” Moagi noted.



In the wake of evolving global megatrends, SANPC will operate in an increasingly volatile, unpredictable, and disrupted world. South Africa’s fragile economy, with its urgent need for state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to drive infrastructure and industrial growth, underscores SANPC’s role as a catalyst for structural reform along the energy value chain.



“We are open to learning from global leaders, but our primary goal is to create a sector that serves South Africa’s people and strengthens our economy,” Moagi emphasized.



In May 2025, SANPC will participate in the Invest in African Energy (IAE) Forum in Paris, where Moagi will engage with global investors under the theme: ‘Pioneering Africa’s Energy Boom: Strategic Investment for Maximum Returns’.



“We are working toward a future where Africa is a net energy exporter, and SANPC is at the forefront of this transformation,” Moagi concludes.



As SANPC advances an integrated energy future, it will address South Africa’s energy challenges, foster regional growth, and solidify its place as a cornerstone of Africa’s energy renaissance.

Elevating Indigenous Stories From Cultural Wealth To Global Prosperity 

Obadare Peter Adewale, the founder of Digital Encode Limited, believes that inclusion and collaboration are key as the African continent navigates its digital future. 



In a dimly lit room in Lagos, Nigeria, twenty two years ago, a young tech enthusiast was hunched over his computer, captivated not by gaming or social media, but by the boundless—and often challenging—digital frontier. Behind The Firewall: The Quest For Digital Safety

Samuel Saba is the Chairman of Infinity Group, a real estate development group that is headquartered out of Dubai, with significant investments in Zanzibar, Tanzania.



The Infinity Group, which currently employs more than 1,000 people, internationally, has crossed a Gross Development Value (GDV) of $430 million with its existing pipeline of real estate projects.



As with the group, Samuel Saba is also the Chairman of Infinity Foundation, which, aside from sponsoring various organizations, has also directly committed approximately $4 million to the repainting of Stone Town in Zanzibar. The initiative was inaugurated by H.E, the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of The Revolutionary Council, Hussein Ali Mwinyi.

Infinity Group, under Saba’s leadership, has sought to diversify its business interest outside of the Middle East, and into the East African market, particularly in Zanzibar, a country that has seen tremendous growth in international visitors – of over 182% in the last four years.



It has been attributed to the value for money found in Zanzibar, as well as significant investment from the government in public infrastructure, a friendly business environment, beautiful beaches, and a hospitable population.



To date, Infinity Group has launched several projects on the island, the largest of which is a mega-development in Nungwi called the Anantara Zanzibar Resort &amp; Residences, which is being developed by one of its subsidiaries, Infinity Developments. Anantara Zanzibar Resort &amp; Residences has a GDV of over $206 million, and has been attracting widespread international recognition, and investment from various demographics, particularly the Middle Eastern and European clientele.

“We are proud to be developing what is set to be the most luxurious resort on the island when we open our doors to visitors in 2027,” Saba said.



Infinity has also chosen to invest in cultural tourism and its preservation on the island by investing over $12,000,000 in the renovation, restoration, and preservation of various museums, gardens, and public spaces in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.



Construction for several of these projects have already taken place, and completion is expected by mid-year 2025. One of the projects located in Stone Town is known as the Old Fort.



The group has no plans of slowing down and, in a short amount of time, has the current title of being the largest private developer on the island, with an existing portfolio of about 9 projects. It will be exciting to see what other investments and initiatives are yet to come.



A wide variety of investors from all over the world have been flocking to invest in Zanzibar, and the future looks very bright for the island nation, known for its warm climate, and crystal blue beaches. The future of Zanzibar is being built today – one that Zanzibaris, Tanzanians and visitors will all come to enjoy.

Over 200 business leaders, innovators, and tastemakers came together for a celebration, away from their usual routines, at The Blue Party, an invite-only gathering recently hosted by Johnnie Walker Blue Label in Kisumu, Kenya. It marked a pivotal moment in the city’s growing reputation as a hub for premium experiences.



Held at Kisumu Yacht Club, a members-only sailing club on the serene shores of Lake Victoria, The Blue Party delivered a blend of sophistication and luxury against a breathtaking lakeside backdrop.



Showers of rain did not dampen the spirit of the guests who enjoyed a memorable whisky-tasting experience, where Johnnie Walker Blue Label’s rich, refined flavors were paired with gourmet delicacies. The blend of high-end offerings and scenic beauty created an evening that those in attendance will cherish for years to come.



The event also emphasized the exclusivity of the brand, which is known as a luxury symbol in the world of whisky. Introduced in 1992, Blue Label represents the apex of craftsmanship, made from the rarest and finest casks. With only one in 10,000 casks selected for blending, the brand epitomizes rarity and precision.

The Blue Party, held in November, was perfectly timed to usher in the festive season. Beginning at 5pm, the event transitioned seamlessly from a productive workday to an evening of relaxation. The highlight of the night was a private auction featuring premium collections, including the coveted Blue Label King George V. Friendly yet competitive bidding heightened the excitement, with clinking glasses punctuating each winning bid. Remarkably, the evening saw the sale of 150 bottles of Blue Label, an impressive indicator of the region’s growing affinity for premium indulgences.



Entertainment was another standout element. Guests enjoyed performances by the renowned Sauti Band, a Kenyan musical group known for their unique blend of Afro-pop, R&amp;B, and traditional Kenyan music, followed by DJs Gilmore and Skratch, well-known for their eclectic mixes and ability to blend various genres seamlessly, keeping the dance floor alive late into the night.



The entertainment created a lively contrast to the otherwise intimate and sophisticated tone of the evening, reflecting the versatility of Johnnie Walker Blue Label &#8211; sophistication blended with spirited celebration.



Luxury events in Kenya are on the rise, reflecting a broader shift in consumer behavior as more individuals seek premium experiences. This trend is not just about high-end products but also about curated, exclusive events that offer immersive experiences. As disposable incomes grow and the middle class becomes more affluent, there is an increasing demand for premium goods and experiences among Kenyan consumers.

In 2026, CRDB Bank will celebrate three decades of operations in Tanzania, having originated from the cooperative movement in the late 1960s, shortly after Tanzania’s liberation from colonial rule and during the formative years of economic liberalization.&nbsp;



At the heart of CRDB’s evolution — from a cooperative rural development bank to a dynamic financial services provider — is the bank’s innate desire to transform lives. Leveraging digital innovation, the bank is expanding its customer base through mobile banking and web-based applications, with a special focus on underserved segments, including women and youth. “Women play a crucial role in the economic transformation of many countries, yet they often lack access to finance,” Nsekela says.&nbsp;



Through initiatives like the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative, the bank is helping women-led SMEs in Tanzania and Burundi access financing. “We also offer women-specific products, such as the Malkia account, tailored to the needs of modern women with consistent incomes,” explains Nsekela.&nbsp;



“Our strategic pillars focus on solidifying our market position, driving business growth, ensuring sustainability, and laying strong foundations for future growth,” explains Leo Ndimbo, CRDB’s Director of Business Transformation.&nbsp;



Financing Key Infrastructure Projects&nbsp;



As Tanzania progresses with infrastructure development, CRDB Bank has played an integral role, participating in nearly all major infrastructure projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), the Nyerere Hydropower Project, and the expansion of Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA). Deepening Access Through Robust Distribution&nbsp;



A major factor behind CRDB’s financial success over the past five years has been its strong market presence. During this period, the bank has heavily invested in enhancing its distribution, focusing on alternative banking channels.&nbsp;



The SimBanking platform has significantly reshaped how customers interact with the bank, facilitating an average of 70 million transactions every month. As of June 2024, 1.46 million accounts transacted on the platform, moving over TZS5.98 trillion ($2.22 billion), which reflects high utilization among retail customers. Additionally, through partnerships with mobile money platforms, the bank was able to extend micro credit to over 11 million Tanzanians as of June 2024.&nbsp;



Leveraging Technology to Drive Growth&nbsp;



A critical aspect of CRDB Bank’s digital transformation has been the digitization of customer journeys. The bank has adopted a robust Know Your Customer (KYC) framework that allows customers to open accounts via mobile phones. “We have seen a tremendous growth in customer numbers because of this and this fits perfectly into our long-term growth strategy,” says Ndimbo.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



This innovation is particularly beneficial for Tanzania’s young, tech-savvy population, who demand quick and easy access to financial services.&nbsp;



Strategic Focus on Regional Expansion&nbsp;



As part of its medium-term strategy, CRDB Bank is not only deepening its presence within Tanzania but also expanding its reach across East Africa. The bank currently operates in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with plans to tap into new markets and diversify its revenue streams, ensuring sustained growth and resilience.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Q. Can you share the journey of Eva’s Coffee, from its inception to where it is today? What inspired you to venture into the coffee industry, particularly as a woman in agriculture?

Eva’s Coffee Limited is a company dedicated to empowering women in agriculture. When the call came for us to shift from aid to trade, I asked myself, ‘What does Kenya have that the world needs every morning?’ The answer was clear—a cup of coffee. With a passion for gender equality, I established Eva’s Coffee to connect women producers to global markets and unlock economic opportunities for them.&nbsp;



Before venturing into agriculture, I authored Kenya’s Ksh4 billion ($30.9 million) Free Maternity Policy, significantly reducing maternal deaths. Today, Eva’s Coffee supports over 600 women farmers, produces award-winning coffee, and advocates for women’s inclusion through platforms like the <a href="https://www.womenincoffee.org/blog/2022/7/18/iwca-welcomes-kenya-chapter" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Women’s Coffee Alliance Kenya Chapter</a>.&nbsp;



Our work has earned recognition from <a href="https://www.awepkenya.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The African Women’s Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP)</a> and been featured on CNN, showcasing our role as a progressive company embracing the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. Eva’s Coffee is about more than coffee—it’s about creating opportunities and making a lasting impact. 



Q. Empowerment seems to be a core value of Eva’s Coffee. Could you elaborate on the initiatives or programs you have in place to support and uplift other women in agriculture?

Empowerment is at the heart of everything we do at Eva’s Coffee. Supporting and uplifting women in agriculture is not just a value but a commitment that drives our initiatives and programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;



We provide training in sustainable farming techniques to help women produce high-quality coffee and access better yields and prices. Through partnerships with organizations like the United States African Development Foundation (USADF), International Trade Center (ITC), Afreximbank, and Absa Bank, we offer women farmers access to microloans, grants, and essential farming inputs, enabling them to expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods.&nbsp;



As a 3P company (Profit, Planet, People), we prioritize climate resilience and advocate for women’s inclusion in the coffee industry through platforms like the International Women’s Coffee Alliance Kenya Chapter. We also connect women to global markets, providing export readiness training and market linkages.&nbsp;



Health is another critical area we focus on because, as I always say, a sick farmer cannot deliver even a kilo of coffee. Through partnerships with Vectorgram Health, we’ve introduced Artificial Intelligence (AI) breast cancer detection and supported farmers through medical camps.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Through these initiatives, we are not only equipping women with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive but also creating a ripple effect of empowerment that strengthens communities and paves the way for a more inclusive and equitable agricultural sector.&nbsp;



Q.Agriculture accounts for approximately 21% of Africa’s GDP, and women make up 60-80% of agricultural labor. However, with the sector being largely informal, women are not able to earn decent living wages and often remain in poverty despite their contributions. What actions can be taken to promote women’s economic power in the agriculture sector?

To promote women’s economic power in agriculture, several actions need to be taken.&nbsp;&nbsp;



First, ensuring equal land rights and inheritance for women is critical, as land is a fundamental asset that provides security and leverage for sustainable investment. Access to finance and credit is equally important, allowing women to invest in their farms without the need for land as collateral.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Tailored training programs can enhance women’s agricultural skills and knowledge. Facilitating market access and value-addition opportunities can help women sell their produce at better prices, while policies that address gender disparities and promote women’s representation in decision-making are essential for long-term change. Investing in climate-resilient practices, modern technology, and support networks—such as childcare and healthcare—can further empower women by reducing the risks they face.&nbsp;



Q. Gender inequality and poor representation of women in decision-making roles remain a significant barrier to women&#8217;s economic power through agriculture. What are some of the drivers of inequality and what opportunities do you see for African countries to address these barriers, including through gender-sensitive policies?

I have witnessed firsthand how gender roles, limited mobility, and unequal access to resources hinder many women from fully participating in this critical sector. Institutional barriers, such as discriminatory laws, lack of representation in decision-making roles, and inadequate education and training, exacerbate these inequalities. Economic factors like wage gaps, limited access to credit, and unequal land ownership further prevent women from achieving economic independence.&nbsp;



To address these challenges, we need gender-sensitive policies that reform discriminatory laws, promote women’s land rights, and ensure equitable resource access. Capacity building through education, leadership training, and access to technology can empower women while improving access to credit and financial services and supporting entrepreneurship can boost their economic power. Fund allocators must intentionally address gender bottlenecks, such as the lack of land or vehicles as collateral. Advocacy and partnerships with governments, international organizations, and research institutions are also essential for driving systemic change.&nbsp;



By tackling these barriers and embracing these opportunities, we can create a more equitable and sustainable agricultural sector that uplifts women and promotes their economic independence, enabling them to contribute to the broader economy.&nbsp;



Q. What are your plans for Eva’s Coffee? How do you envision further supporting women in agriculture and continuing to create a positive impact through your work?

At Eva’s Coffee, we’re proud to be a local roaster and distributor, sourcing directly from women groups in coffee cooperatives and providing roasted coffee for the local market. Looking ahead, I envision Eva’s Coffee becoming a hub for coffee tourism through the creation of an Eco-Lodge. This lodge will offer tourists a unique ‘farm to cup’ experience, showcasing the journey of coffee while promoting our high-quality products.&nbsp;



Beyond tourism, the Eco-Lodge will also serve as a training center for farmers, with a special focus on empowering women and youth through good agricultural practices (GAP). This initiative aims to strengthen their expertise and create opportunities for economic growth. The Eco-Lodge is more than a business expansion—it’s a vision to institutionalize our impact, ensuring that Eva’s Coffee outlives its founder by building platforms to nurture the next generation of agricultural development champions.&nbsp;

Brewing Change And Empowering Women In Agriculture 

AB InBev moves into the second year of its Growing Retailers Innovatively Together (GRIT) program in Africa. Building on its initial success, in 2023, GRIT has expanded rapidly to seven African countries, now boasting over 6,500 trained retailers. The program aims to enhance entrepreneurial skills, stimulate business growth and create much-needed employment opportunities across the continent.



Increased investment in education fuels economic growth by equipping individuals with the skills needed to innovate, compete, and thrive in a dynamic market. By upskilling retailers, AB InBev empowers them to expand their businesses, enabling them to make meaningful contributions to their families and communities.



Emphasis for the training is placed on upskilling retail partners owned or run by women and the youth (above 18 years of age), as this demographic is the backbone of an economy.



Adu Rando, Managing Director for Nile Breweries in Uganda, says, “We strongly believe in driving and growing together with our partners, customers and consumers; as this is part of our culture. We need to invest time and energy in things we believe in, and we believe that we can only grow when our customers grow.”



“Very often we see that bar owners or shop owners have not had formal training, nor have they had formal education, so there is normally a gap in knowledge that we can help fill by running this program and the training sessions.”



David Davidson from Black Lion Bar in Teshie Lascala, Ghana had this to add: “I’ve been challenged by certain things that even as a manager of this place I don’t know. But as part of this GRIT program, I’ve been able to gain new skills and have now acquired this knowledge to be able to change my business. This will also help me to train my employees”.



The GRIT program is customized by three key pillars, namely growth, education and inclusion. The program’s distinctive features include:



Growth



B2B platform access: Retailers gain access toAB InBev’s BEES platform, one of the world’s largest business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce platforms, empowering more than 3.1 million SMEs in 20 countries with tools, technologies and training. The BEES platform is currently running in three of our African markets namely Tanzania, Uganda and most recently Ghana. Uganda BEES started a 3P Marketplace in cooperation with the Keshwala Group, adding over 50 non-beer SKU offerings to select regions of the country in year one.



Infrastructure support: Retailers receive essential infrastructure support, including electricity, Wi-Fi, sanitation and security where required.



Thais Cavinatto, Zambian Breweries Country Director says, “Retailers are the backbone of our business. Our success is tied to theirs, and we grow together. The GRIT program is designed to foster long-term partnerships by providing education, guidance, and the necessary resources for ongoing growth”.



Education



Business training: Tailored training in financial and stock management, marketing and sales, and responsible retailing.



Coaching and mentoring: A hybrid model of both in-person and online coaching and mentoring to support continuous entrepreneurial development.



Violet Zulu, a retailer from Bauleni, Zambia adds, “This is the first time I’ve attended this program and Zambian Breweries has taught me how to take care of my business, the finances, and my customers”.



Inclusion



Financial access: Participants are provided with access to bank accounts, insurance, credit, and cashless payment mechanisms.



Administrative support: Technical assistance with legislative compliance and harm-reduction guidelines.



Paul Lubuka, a bar owner in Uganda, says, “I really learned how to manage capital &#8211; and how to get capital and maintain stock, as well as how I can raise my capital in order to boost my business”.



Andrew Whiting, Vice President, Legal and Corporate Affairs at AB InBev, explains, “The name GRIT symbolizes our determination to work together to realize shared value with stakeholders. Achieving entrepreneurial development, business growth and sustainability for our retail partners requires grit and perseverance and ensures that AB InBev continues to create a future with more cheers.”



“Entrepreneurship is about supporting and uplifting small and medium-sized businesses across our value chain, from smallholder farmers to local retailers. Beyond mentorship, GRIT provides tangible resources like access to funding and cashless payment mechanisms. Strengthening our retailers strengthens their communities, enabling sustainable business growth across the continent,” he adds. &nbsp;



This year’s program has grown in terms of its engagement model, which was, at launch, available as an in classroom-only option and has now been enhanced with the offering of a hybrid training model.



Retailers can choose between in-person or online training via a GRIT digital app, which was launched in October 2024.



This makes it possible for more retailers to participate in the course and finish it at a time that works for them. This new model also aligns with AB InBev’s goal of embracing the digitalization journey.



“The empowerment program has been invaluable, showing me how to build strong relationships with my customers and select the right products to sell. I’ve also learned how to follow industry regulations and the importance of sourcing stock from reputable distributors,” says Kimberly Banda, a retailer from Matero, Zambia, another program participant.



Temitope Oguntokun, Legal and Corporate Affairs Director at International Breweries in Nigeria, adds, “To date we are very happy with the progress we are making with this initiative, which we piloted a year ago.”



“The essence of this program is to support our retailers as they are a major partner in our value chain. There has been positive feedback coming from our retailers who were trained in 2023 and 2024, and we plan to grow the program year-on-year to ensure greater impact in our communities.”



The GRIT program has been running from May, and, in October, we introduced the digital platform in seven of AB InBev’s African markets – Nigeria: International Breweries plc, Ghana: Accra Brewery plc, Zambia: Zambian Breweries Plc, Uganda: Nile Breweries Ltd, Tanzania: Tanzanian Breweries Limited, Mozambique: Cervejas de Mocambique (CDM) and Botswana: Kgalagadi Breweries Limited – with the aim of training all retailers in the organization’s supply chain.



Social-impact specialists will monitor the program’s KPIs and ongoing effects on communities and individuals.

The outcomes of COP29 in Baku painted a stark picture of the global energy transition and its role in driving development. While ambition remains high on paper, action lacks the momentum needed to meet the aspirations of developing countries.



As the world debated a $300 billion climate finance agreement, the reality is far more daunting—developing nations require over $1.3 trillion annually to achieve their decarbonization goals and economic development agendas.



This glaring gap is more than a financial issue; it reflects the waning models of donor-recipient dynamics and the lack of inclusivity in the global energy agenda.

A recent McKinsey research report highlights the disconnect between climate aspirations and actual implementation. The report shows how many nations and companies have set targets without outlining concrete plans to achieve them.



For instance, numerous green hydrogen projects have been announced, but few have progressed beyond the initial stages. This trend is not unique to hydrogen, it extends across various critical energy transition technologies. The challenge lies in translating ambitious goals into tangible actions, as delays and project cancellations pose substantial risks to the global climate agenda.



Amid this uncertainty, Saudi Arabia is stepping up, charting a new path that doesn’t rely on pledges but prioritizes practical solutions to address the energy transition and meet the development demands of growing economies.



One such channel is the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), which has been pivotal in financing critical infrastructure projects in Africa, ranging from education to energy. This includes transformative projects that have directly enhanced access to essential services and fostered economic development.



Meanwhile, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) has made substantial investments in Africa. Likewise, Saudi-based, ACWA Power is the world’s largest private water desalination company and a leader in green hydrogen. These investments encompass mining, energy and infrastructure, ensuring long-term benefits for local and growing economies.



“We understand that the energy transition is not a one-man show. Through Vision 2030 and platforms like the Future Minerals Forum, the premier global gathering for minerals, the Kingdom is reimagining how mineral-rich regions, long overlooked, can take center stage in the energy transition and harness their mineral-rich opportunities to grow their economies,” explains Khalid Al-Mudaifer,&nbsp;Vice-Minister for Mining Affairs, Saudi Arabia.



At the heart of this vision is the ‘Super Region’, which spans Africa, West Asia, and Central Asia. This region has a vast expanse of untapped mineral wealth. By fostering collaboration, de-risking investments, and building resilient supply chains, Saudi Arabia is proving that bold leadership can unlock shared prosperity.



The Kingdom is also leveraging its location, relationships, and, more importantly, investment power to bring the right stakeholders to Riyadh to discuss the future of the mineral industry at the Future Minerals Forum.



As an extension to conversations set to take place at the forum, the Ministerial Roundtable brings governments together with international organizations and industry representatives to identify and implement practical actions to create mineral value chains.



“The Super Region is an example of how partnerships and collaboration can scale investments in the entire value chain of critical minerals – from exploration to manufacturing – creating a foundation for shared prosperity and resilience,” Al-Mudaifer adds.



“The Future Minerals Forum initiative creates a framework for sustainable, inclusive growth. By aligning regional cooperation with local development goals, the Super Region ensures that investments in minerals and mining generate economic opportunities, build resilient supply chains, and accelerate the shift to clean energy.”



Strengthening supply chains and regional collaboration



The Kingdom’s mining and mineral strategy, which is aligned to the objectives of Vision 2030, is to strengthen supply chain resilience, ensuring that the Kingdom and its partners are well-positioned to meet global demand for critical minerals. By serving as a strategic commercial hub, Saudi Arabia facilitates the seamless movement of resources, technologies, and expertise across continents.



For that purpose, the Kingdom announced the National Minerals Program earlier this year, which aims to optimize mineral supply chains by encouraging local investment in global mineral assets to satisfy the Kingdom’s increased mineral demand. This demand is being driven by the massive ‘giga projects’, and its National Industrial Strategy, which aims to develop future industries in Saudi Arabia like automotive, defense, aviation and renewable energy.



In terms of the concrete steps Saudi Arabia is taking, Al-Mudaifer shares, “We are attracting $100 billion in mineral industries, by 2035, including lithium, copper, steel, and more. Coupled with a robust infrastructure of ports, railways, and industrial cities, Saudi Arabia offers unmatched opportunities for investors, providing access to over 3.5 billion consumers across the Super Region”.



To ensure a steady supply of critical minerals, the Kingdom has also created Manara Minerals, which has already made its first strategic investment. This proactive approach secures the resources needed to drive giga-projects while supporting global energy transition goals.



Moreover, the Future Minerals Forum’s Super Region encourages collaboration among governments, private sector players, and local communities, ensuring that mining projects not only extract value but also contribute to infrastructure, education, and capacity building in host countries.



A model for addressing the inequities exposed by COP29



The Super Region initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s overarching vision to create a sustainable, prosperous and globally connected future. By emphasizing economic diversification and regional cooperation, it offers a model for addressing the challenges exposed by COP29 and advancing the new energy ambitions at a global scale. It demonstrates how strategic investments can address the urgent development challenges of our time.



The initiative enables cooperation on maximizing the benefits from collective mineral endowments, by establishing minerals and metals value chains that have local communities at their heart, and ultimately increase the quality of lives around mining operations.



As Saudi Arabia prepares to host the fourth edition Future Minerals Forum and the Ministerial Roundtable in Riyadh, the Super Region will take center stage as a transformative initiative that redefines the role of mining in sustainable development. At the third edition, Ministerial Roundtable participants reinforced the message calling for increased financing to support supplier countries’ development of their minerals sectors, as well as downstream value addition.

The prestigious golf course played host to the CNBC Africa Corporate Golf Tournament Rwanda for the inaugural Rwanda Golf Day on September 12, 2024, organized by the ABN Group. After 17 successful years of hosting the event in South Africa, this was the first time the tournament was organized by ABN outside of South Africa. ABN Group Chairman Rakesh Wahi explained that the event was part of ABN&#8217;s broader strategy to bring businesses together through golf, fostering valuable networking opportunities.&nbsp;



“CNBC Africa was established in Rwanda nine years ago, and we have been sharing Rwanda’s development success story with the world. There’s no better way to do this than through golf. Kigali is the second city to host this event, and we plan to expand it further,” said Wahi.&nbsp;&nbsp;



The tournament drew more than 70 participants from leading companies in Rwanda, who teed off alongside Wahi and Denham Pons, CNBC Africa’s Head of East Africa. Among the key sponsors was Trinity Metals. It’s CEO, Geleta, highlighted the importance of participating in the tournament: “We’ve only been operating in Rwanda for two and a half years, and this event provides an opportunity to connect with our business partners and support the growth of the mining industry in Africa.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The financing is being undertaken as a first tranche within a broader mandate with the Standard Bank Group, which has been appointed to lead and arrange up to $300 million senior debt to support the scaling of CrossBoundary Energy’s renewable energy portfolio serving Commercial and Industrial (C&amp;I) clients across Africa.



CrossBoundary Energy was supported by Cygnum Capital acting as exclusive financial adviser, and by Bracewell (U.K.) LLP as borrower’s counsel. Trinity International LLP acted as lenders’ counsel on the transaction.



In Africa, access to reliable and affordable power is one of the largest impediments to business growth. While service providers can solve this, access to finance remains an immense barrier to companies accessing that power. The IEA estimates that the energy transition <a href="https://www.iea.org/reports/scaling-up-private-finance-for-clean-energy-in-emerging-and-developing-economies/executive-summary">will require $160 billion annual </a>investment between 2026—2030 to align with climate goals, the bulk of which will come from the private sector.

Armed with a unique approach that blends her sharp wit with storytelling, she uses TikTok to dispel myths and educate a global audience about the continent’s true diversity and beauty.&nbsp;



When Ekezie first joined TikTok, she noticed a barrage of negative stereotypes about Africa, including absurd notions like people sending “water” to Africa in envelopes.&nbsp;&nbsp;



“I never realized that there were so many negative misconceptions about Africa until I joined TikTok,” she explains.&nbsp;&nbsp;



The turning point came when one of her videos showcasing Africa’s beauty went viral, attracting a flood of misguided and misinformed comments. This prompted her to take action. Through humor and an unmistakable charm, Ekezie began addressing common stereotypes, intending to educate people and encourage them to explore beyond the surface.&nbsp;

What started as an outlet for fun videos quickly transformed into a platform for addressing critical health topics. Dr Saleh now holds a partnership with the <a href="https://www.who.int/">World Health Organization (WHO)</a>, amplifying accurate health information to combat the rampant misinformation that pervades the internet.



“TikTok has been a transformative platform for reaching a diverse and global audience,” he explains.



“With its ability to make complex health topics accessible to millions, it’s become a tool for positive change, especially in destigmatizing discussions around mental health.”



Shifting Focus to Mental Health Advocacy



One of the areas where Dr Saleh has found his niche is mental health, an issue that is often clouded by stigma. Through his TikTok platform, which boasts over 2.7 million followers, he has addressed various aspects of mental well-being, tackling topics like depression, anxiety, and stress management.



“In my videos, I aim to break down the complexities of mental health into everyday language,” he says.



“I want to help people recognize that mental health is as important as physical health. Through TikTok, I’m able to create a space where people feel comfortable engaging with these difficult conversations.”

The WHO quickly recognized the potential in Dr Saleh’s content, particularly during the height of the pandemic.



His ability to simplify health guidelines and translate complex medical advice into digestible and relatable content led to him being featured in international media outlets like HuffPost and Good Morning America.



“My partnership with WHO allows me to amplify reliable, evidence-based information on a global scale. Together, we’re closing the gap between public health knowledge and the communities that need it the most,” he says.



For Dr Saleh, the WHO partnership underscores a new chapter in his career. No longer just a practicing doctor in underserved communities, he now sees himself as a global health educator.



“The transition to working with the WHO has allowed me to make a larger impact. I can address misinformation directly and connect people to the resources they need.”



Balancing Medicine and Content Creation



Juggling the demands of a medical career with a growing presence on TikTok requires careful time management. Dr Saleh emphasizes that setting boundaries and maintaining a routine are crucial not only for his professional responsibilities but also for his mental well-being.



“I make sure to prioritize my mental health by taking breaks and spending time with my family. This balance is essential in ensuring that I continue to create impactful content without burning out,” he shares.



His content creation process revolves around rigorous research.



“Accuracy is at the core of what I do. I spend hours researching each topic to make sure I’m providing the most reliable and up-to-date information,” he explains, crediting evidence-based guidelines from sources like the WHO to ensure his content is trustworthy.



The Power of TikTok and the Change Makers Program



Dr Saleh’s journey from frontline doctor to global health educator is emblematic of the power of TikTok as a force for social good. As part of the <a href="https://newsroom.tiktok.com/en-africa/making-a-difference-in-africa-through-the-tiktok-change-makers-program">TikTok Change Makers Program</a>, he is among a cohort of creators using the platform to drive meaningful impact. The program connects creators with organizations like the WHO and provides the resources they need to expand their reach.

Growing up in Mombasa, Kenya, the most advanced technology we had access to in schools was scientific calculators.&nbsp; Fast forward to a post-pandemic world where Education Technology (EdTech) has taken center stage in education; learners can continue learning when classes are disrupted, teachers are temporarily unavailable and can even research school topics ahead of time.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



Over the last 17 years, having worked with policy makers, educators, and other stakeholders in integrating technology to make education more inclusive, I have become a crusader for EdTech.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



The work we do at the Mastercard Foundation Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning includes supporting EdTech stakeholders on policy and thought leadership on best practices that can strengthen our education ecosystems in Africa.&nbsp;



A question frequently asked is, ‘what has influenced the change in technology in the education space, especially in Africa?’ First, the change in the youth population in Africa has doubled in the last 40 years and, by 2030 it is expected to represent over 40% of the world’s youth numbers.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Second, with the burgeoning youth population, the jobs market is shifting exponentially with a significant shift towards service-oriented jobs.&nbsp; Gone are the days when, excelling in a specific field guaranteed employment.&nbsp; In 2024, even human precision jobs, such as medical surgeries, are under threat from robotics. This highlights the need to equip learners with broad, adaptable skills to stay agile in shifting job markets.&nbsp;



Unfortunately, education resources in Africa today cannot keep up with the increased number of learners and the dynamic jobs landscape.&nbsp; This has given rise to innovations in technology to address gaps in access to quality education.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



The rapid and daily evolution of technology has played an influential role in how EdTech is found in some form in almost every learner’s and educator’s life.&nbsp; In Africa, despite infrastructure challenges, EdTech has leapfrogged, rapidly expanding access to education through mobile and digital platforms, such as the Eneza Education platform, one of the first Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellows. Users of their platform can access educational content through phones via a USSD code for as low as two cents a day.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



With <a href="https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1124918.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smartphone penetration at 50% in 2023</a>, about 650 million mobile phone users have mobile-based learning as a primary mode of EdTech adoption.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Even with a very innovative, locally-developed EdTech ecosystem in Africa, to the number of learners who constantly use EdTech is still very low.&nbsp; And one of the primary reasons for this is that countries have not adopted policies that can support the idea of learners and teachers using technology to improve the relevance and quality of education.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



For EdTech to flourish in Africa, policy alignment is crucial to ensure that digital initiatives are sustainable, inclusive, and aligned with broader educational goals. The role of policymakers is to drive initiatives, invest in infrastructure, and set standards that encourage innovation and make digital learning an integral part of Africa’s educational landscape.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



A well guided, multi stakeholder and data driven EdTech policy can plan the country’s ecosystem to address access to quality education by all, and above all prepare learners for emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well skill them for jobs of the future.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



It should also be intentional to tackle the problem of inclusivity: ensure access to education and technology to all learners irrespective of gender, equity disparities, disabilities, in displaced communities and above all, out of school youth.&nbsp; Indeed, cross-sectoral policy that enables innovation, was one the three recommendations that was agreed upon as top priority by ministers and ministry representatives from 18 countries across Africa at the 2024 Mastercard Foundation 3rd Ministerial Forum in Abuja, Nigeria.&nbsp; The <a href="https://mastercardfdn.org/all/centre-for-innovative-teaching-and-learning-in-ict/mastercard-foundation-edtech-conference-in-abuja-ends-with-10-recommendations-for-delivering-the-future-of-learning-in-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recommendations</a> emerged from a collective call to action from the inaugural Mastercard Foundation EdTech Conference.&nbsp;



My earlier experience in supporting the drafting of ICT in education policies, was that the subsequent implementation of the polices became a government-only domain.&nbsp; This often resulted in a one-size-fits-all approach with multi-millions spent but with minimal impact.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Months or years after the projects have commenced, devices remain unopened in their original packaging. This observation is not restricted to one country in Africa, but observers from several countries have reported the same.&nbsp; It stems from a belief that with a minimum effort of device usage, and access to internet, content and basic training, classrooms will magically transform into models of 21st century learning.&nbsp; It’s like a classroom of 50 students where the teacher moves at the pace of the brightest pupil.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Until governments stop implementing EdTech in isolation from the broader education ecosystem, success is doomed to be minimal.&nbsp;



The massive learning losses experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic changed the mindsets of many governments.&nbsp; At the Mastercard Foundation 2nd Ministerial Forum held in 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda, almost all ministers and ministerial representatives from 15 countries across Africa agreed on two main courses of action.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



First call was to instill resilience in education to withstand future shocks like the pandemic.&nbsp; This means adopting hybrid learning models that blend in-person and online education to enhance accessibility, engagement, and personalized learning experiences. The second call emphasized that, given the colossal task ahead, governments would require support from both public and private stakeholders, spanning from policy revision to implementation of hybrid models.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



The Deputy Minister from the Department of Basic Education in South Africa, Dr. Reginah Mhaule, even went on to say that the many corrective measures they had undertaken to overcome the learning losses, would be lost now that classrooms were resuming, unless captured in a new policy.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



So, what should an EdTech policy development process look like?&nbsp; At the onset of a policy drafting process, it is important to outline a few objectives, or a “north star”, otherwise the policy will not be measurable nor provide a direction or a unifying vision.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



The objective could vary by country context, such as building a digitally empowered workforce for Africa’s future or simply providing universal access to quality digital education.&nbsp; The latter objective reminds me of a matter-of-fact statement made by a teacher when I visited a public school in peri-urban Cape Town, South Africa, in 2022: “the young learners are surrounded by all forms of technology the moment they step out of the school, so if we exclude technology in the classroom, we will lose their interest to study”.&nbsp;



While the policy will be owned by the government, it should be very inclusive and incorporate the input from all the stakeholders: the EdTech community, development partners, the users such as teachers, parents and, above all, the young people.&nbsp; It should be cross-sector collaborated and decisions taken must be supported by data and evidence.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



In 2023, through our work at the Mastercard Foundation in partnership with the World Bank, I had the opportunity to enable this inclusive process when supporting the Ministries of Education in Rwanda and Ethiopia to draft an EdTech policy and an ICT in education policy, respectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



The Rwanda draft policy emerged from an EdTech strategy created after an <a href="https://mastercardfdn.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/EdTech-Landscape-in-Rwanda-Summary.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EdTech Landscape study</a> was carried out in the country.&nbsp; The study commissioned by the Mastercard Foundation provided data as a starting point for the strategy.&nbsp; In Ethiopia, the policy that that is now approved, has unfolded further opportunities for support from the World Bank for its implementation.&nbsp; In 2025, through the Mastercard Foundation Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning, we are planning to support National EdTech Strategies in Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa.&nbsp;



Finally, even a well drafted policy is not a means to an end.&nbsp; At the Mastercard Foundation 3rd Ministerial Forum on EdTech in Africa, Albert Nsengiyumva, Executive Secretary of the Association of Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) said a policy will only be as effective as the resources allocated to implement it. I will add to this that there needs to be clear guidelines on the sense of ownership on who does what for the various aspects of the policy: digital infrastructure and access, content, teachers capacity building and skilling, etc.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



With the right attitude and stewardship, we can all come together to improve the education outcomes and skills of youth in Africa.&nbsp; Education, after all, is everyone’s business.&nbsp;

Building Africa’s Future: Why EdTech Needs Policy Support 

The global data center industry has emerged as a cornerstone of the digital age, facilitating the storage, processing, and management of vast amounts of data.

Over the past decade, the global data center industry has witnessed unprecedented growth. Valued at $93.7 billion in 2023, the market is projected to maintain a strong growth trajectory with a CAGR of approximately 22% from 2018 to 2025.



As digital transformation becomes a strategic imperative across various sectors, the need for secure, scalable, and reliable data storage and processing solutions has and will continue to skyrocket. Concerns about data privacy, data nationalism and data localization requirements further accelerate digital transformation initiatives, driving demand for local data centers.



In Africa, the industry, though still in its infancy, is rapidly growing and evolving, propelled by the continent’s burgeoning digital economy and its ability to leapfrog basic services through technological innovation.



The increasing access to the internet and data usage, primarily via mobile phones, is fueling a digital revolution, positioning Africa as the next frontier of the global data center industry.



We continue seeing strong demand fundamentals that favor Africa as a destination for data centers. Growing interest from the major global cloud service providers such as AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft, along with content delivery network providers over the last few years continues to drive demand for data center infrastructure.



Enterprise demand from governments and private companies migrating their servers to third-party leased space, as well as demand from connectivity providers, are also significantly increasing demand. Many global, pan-African, and local data center operators are recognizing this potential and are now investing in building robust data centre ecosystems to meet the growing demand for digital services.



For example, Equinix has invested $160 million into its first facility in South Africa that will offer 1,860 square meters of rack space with 4MW of IT load. Similarly, it also acquired MainOne, a West African data center provider. This acquisition allowed Equinix to expand its presence in Africa and leverage MainOne’s established infrastructure to strengthen its position in the region.



Africa Data Centres, one of the largest Pan-African operators on the continent, has various facilities in Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa, in Lagos, Nigeria, and in Nairobi in Kenya, and continues to have a strong pipeline of expansion sites.



Digital Realty, another key player in the global data center industry, finalized a deal to acquire a majority stake in Teraco, an African data center provider with multiple facilities across South Africa. Private equity firms have likewise been actively involved in data center investments across Africa. Notable names include Actis and Helios Investment Partners, who have invested in several data center projects across the continent.



However, the region faces challenges due to insufficient infrastructure investment, high temperatures requiring advanced cooling systems and late adoption, resulting in a disproportionate capacity gap.



The African data center colocation market also remains highly concentrated in a few countries, namely South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, and Kenya representing majority of the available white space. South Africa is the largest market in Africa, with approximately 300MW of live supply and accounting for around 70% of the continent’s IT load.



South Africa, with its advanced telecommunications infrastructure, strategic geographic location, and robust regulatory environment, stands as a prime destination for data center investments in Africa, serving as a hub for the region.



The country boasts a vibrant digital ecosystem, a growing tech-savvy population, a strong financial sector, and has various initiatives promoting the Information and Communications industry. Favorable land prices (compared to other countries on the continent and in developed markets), connectivity and



infrastructure make it an attractive choice for hyperscale tenants expanding their operations across the continent, therefore driving demand for data center infrastructure in-country.



Despite this potential, several country specific challenges could inhibit growth. These include energy supply issues and costs, other environmental concerns such as cooling and water consumption, security concerns including crime, the construction mafia and cybersecurity, and a shortage of skilled labor.



International and local data center operators continue to express strong interest in investing in Africa, particularly South Africa, with demand remaining robust. However, establishing strategic public-private partnerships is crucial for fostering industry growth and addressing current challenges.



These initiatives may include investments in renewable energy sources which can support both a reduction in power costs and environmental impact of these facilities, enhanced security measures deployed to building sites as well as innovation and skills development by educational institutions.



The demand for cloud-computing and data centers in Africa plays a crucial role in driving digital transformation. Businesses benefit from increased processing speeds, reduced latency, and enhanced reliability, leading to improved operational efficiency and contributing to the digital success of organizations, ultimately resulting in improved service delivery and enhanced user experiences.

Phupho Gumede K’s Rent-A-Dress is redefining sustainable fashion by making high-quality style more accessible, whilst simultaneously working to reduce the environmental impact of fast fashion.



The style and fashion industry is brimming with thriving businesses but the reality is that this passion-profession is also gradually harming the planet.



According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the fashion industry accounts for 2-8% of global carbon emissions. It’s also the second biggest consumer of water.



For Phupho Gumede, a visionary stylist and fashion entrepreneur, acknowledging the impact his passion-profession has had on the environment has not been an easy journey. In adopting this new philosophy, Gumede applied it as a core focus of Rent-A-Dress, which he created to not only provide style, but also encourage sustainability and self-expression.

As often reported, fashion is a big contributor to environmental pollution, and thus climate change. Be it the mass production of garments, or the poor disposal of barely-worn clothes, the clothing industry has created significant challenges.

“Every dress that is rented instead of bought is one less item that risks ending up in a landfill,” Gumede emphasizes.

Orange Middle East and Africa (OMEA) and Mastercard have announced a strategic partnership to expand access to mobile financial services across Sub-Saharan Africa.



This collaboration, the largest of its kind in the region, is set to enable millions of Orange Money wallet holders to access digital payments through Mastercard’s global network of merchants by 2025.



The partnership will be rolled out in seven countries including Cameroon, Central African Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Orange Money customers will be able to instantly obtain a virtual or physical debit card, linked directly to their Orange Money wallets.



These cards will allow seamless payments both locally and internationally, enabling transactions with local merchants and on any website or mobile app that accepts Mastercard.



Talking more about the importance of this partnership along with the empowering goal to uplift millions of Africans from a digital transformation perspective is Amnah Ajmal, Executive Vice President Market Development, Mastercard EEMEA, and CEO of Orange Money Group, Aminata Kane:



Q.What motivated Orange and Mastercard to enter into this strategic partnership at this time, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa?



Ajmal: This collaboration has come at a pivotal time for Africa, where there’s great momentum in the digital and financial services landscape. If we look back just a decade or so, mobile money was a bold, promising idea. Today, it is essential — it’s how millions in Africa access basic financial services.



But even with this leap forward, <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2023/11/africa-digital-mobile-banking-financial-inclusion/#:~:text=Today%2C%2048%25%20of%20Africa's%20population,at%20pace%20across%20the%20continent.">only about 48% of adults in Africa are banked</a>. Our combined footprint and experience allow us to reach millions who might not otherwise be included in the digital economy. The ambition for our Orange Money customers is to “break the walls” of payment. Today, an OM customer can already use their<ins> </ins>OM wallet to pay a local bill, a local merchant or on a local website. There are already many services used.



But how can our customer place an order to an international e-commerce website? How can they subscribe to Netflix, order on Alibaba or sponsor his ads on Facebook? How can they pay when travelling to Turkiye, Dubai or during a business trip to meet with suppliers in China?



In all these situations<ins>,</ins> we need international payment mean<ins>s</ins> with a global acceptance network like Mastercard’s. This partnership will help our Orange Money customers mov<ins>e</ins> from local to global payments. It will allow us to leapfrog the growth of our acceptance network and connect our Orange Money accounts to all major websites, merchants, and ATMs. This means so much in terms of business development for our pro and SME customers.



This partnership will empower millions of Orange Money wallet holders to make digital payments through Mastercard’s global network of merchants by 2025, thereby opening up new possibilities for financial independence and participation in the global economy.

Kane:&nbsp; Orange Money is already mainstream, with over 100 million Africans using it to send and receive money, make payments, and access other financial services in 17 countries. This partnership could help to accelerate the growth of mobile money in Africa as Mastercard uses its expertise and resources to make mobile money more accessible to people across the continent.



This partnership will make Orange Money even more relevant as a global payment solution, thanks to the Mastercard ecosystem and support.



It will increase the perceived value of Orange Money for both high value customers and businesses that will be able to seamlessly connect their existing mobile wallet to the payments they need to perform on a daily basis, but also enable new usages for the mass market users that were kept away from accessing an international payment card. Both trends should increase our customers’ commitment to their mobile wallet, and increase the threshold at which a “full bank account” is needed.



Combining domestic efficiency and international relevance, we expect to become the most inclusive and dynamic mobile money operator in Africa in 2030.



Q. How does this partnership promote financial independence, particularly for the unbanked population in Sub-Saharan Africa, and what steps are being taken to ensure security in these transactions?



Ajmal: True financial independence comes from having reliable, accessible tools at your fingertips. This partnership with Orange means that millions of users can now use their Orange Money wallets to make secure, instant payments—whether that’s paying for goods, sending remittances, accessing online shopping, or making a hotel booking. This opens up a world of possibilities, particularly for those in remote areas where banking infrastructure is limited.



This collaboration also ensures these services meet the highest security standards. Mastercard has a longstanding reputation for safeguarding financial transactions globally, and we are applying the same rigor here, working with Orange’s in-depth market reach and knowledge.

Q. How will Orange Money users benefit from having access to Mastercard’s global network, and what kind of opportunities will this unlock for them, particularly in underserved communities?



Kane:  Many people might associate Mastercard with international payments and upscale stores in city centers. With this mindset, one might question the relevance of this service for underserved communities. While this perception holds some truth, it overlooks hundreds of practical use cases tailored to the needs of communities currently excluded from the financial system, such as rural populations, students, retirees, and others. These include withdrawing cash from secure ATMs available 24/7, accessing online training content, promoting a local business through sponsored Facebook pages to expand its reach, paying for digital content produced abroad, or ordering supplies from distant providers.



These are highly tangible use cases where the partnership between Orange Money and Mastercard proves to be an ideal fit. Based on our experience in a few pilot markets, all it takes is offering a simple solution and a few use cases for people to embrace it and adopt practices far beyond what we could have anticipated.



Q. Could you share insights on how this partnership will drive economic growth in these regions, especially with respect to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)? 



Ajmal: SMEs are the backbone of Africa’s economy, driving job creation, innovation, and regional resilience. Through our partnership with Orange, SMEs now gain digital tools that open new markets and foster growth. This partnership provides SMEs with more ways to transact securely and reach a wider customer base, which is critical for their sustainability and scalability. Imagine a small business in Mali that previously relied only on cash transactions — now, with digital payments, they can streamline their sales, reduce cash-handling risks, and even build a transaction history that opens doors to microcredit.



Access to digital transactions also translates to data, which is invaluable for these businesses. SMEs gain insights into spending patterns and customer preferences, which helps them make more informed decisions.



At Mastercard, we are excited about these growth possibilities and the opportunities this partnership unlocks for African entrepreneurs to thrive, innovate, and grow.



Q. How do you envision this collaboration contributing to reducing the gap between formal banking and mobile financial services in Africa?



Kane:&nbsp; Bank penetration rates are still relatively low and vary from region to region, from 20% in Sub-Saharan countries to 60% in the Maghreb.



Around 100 million Africans, long excluded from the banking system, have opened an Orange Money account. It’s a major change: from anywhere, you can put your money safely in your Orange Money account, send it to whomever you like, pay for your shopping, your car registration sticker or your children’s schooling, and so on.



However, mobile money sometimes hits a glass ceiling. As usage grows, customers who rely on Orange Money as their primary account may encounter certain limitations. For instance, while they might receive their salary in their Orange Money account and use it daily for their purchases, they may find themselves unable to make online payment on international websites such as Facebook or Netflix, withdraw from an ATM or use their wallet when they travel abroad. These services are currently reserved for holders of bank accounts—accounts that are not accessible to everyone due to barriers such as minimum deposits, required documents, travel to branches, or monthly fees.



This partnership allows the Orange Money wallet to go further, breaking the ceiling on usage and bringing it closer to the capabilities of a full bank account, while maintaining the simplicity and accessibility that makes it available to the widest possible audience. Customers will no longer have to choose, especially when the banking option isn’t available to them. Their everyday account will meet all their new needs.



Q. How do you see this partnership evolving in the future to further advance Africa’s digital and financial transformation?



Kane:&nbsp; The partnership may evolve to include additional countries and financial products. As digital infrastructure improves, the collaboration could expand to incorporate more innovative solutions that cater to the diverse needs of African consumers and businesses.



There are many options to explore. Developing the virtual card is one, facilitating supplier payments is another. We can also envision linking this card to the credit and overdraft solutions we have launched in several countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Botswana. Finally, by analyzing the usage data from our new service, we will be able to significantly enhance our offerings at both Mastercard and Orange Money—undoubtedly uncovering some major surprises along the way.<del></del>



Q. What are the biggest challenges and opportunities you anticipate in rolling out this partnership across the seven countries and what are the plans to expand this collaboration beyond the initial seven countries?



Kane:&nbsp; As we can see it, we have three main challenges:



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Regulatory framework which imposes some limits to the Mobile Money Operators that are necessary from a regulation perspective but that sometimes limit the services we can provide customers. While some regions are ahead, some countries still see mobile money as a risk or a new tax opportunity rather than a fantastic accelerator of financial inclusion.</li>



<li>Varying levels of digital literacy in different countries. What made the success of Orange Money is the pedagogy and the education. We carry on with any new service.</li>



<li>Adapting to the unexpected in an agile way. A payment card linked to a mobile money account behaves fundamentally differently from one linked to a bank account. The reasons for transaction failures are different, the target merchants are different, and both the frequency and average transaction amounts vary. Orange Money and Mastercard will need to adapt to this new framework to evolve the solution and better meet customer expectations.</li>
</ul>



We work daily on tackling these issues with our teams in our 17 markets, but also with our suppliers, partners, and with the regulatory bodies. Expansion is of course on the menu. We are considering many new markets and new products, capitalizing on the experience gathered from the first markets. We are excited to learn about customers behaviors and knowing how innovative Africans are, see how they create new use cases that were not the initial ones. We are also betting on merchants, mainly informal and SMEs. They are the backbone of our economies, and they need all the tailored financial tools to support their growth and way to prosperity. <ins></ins>



Q. How does the partnership fit into Orange’s and Mastercard’s long-term strategies for the African continent, particularly in terms of leveraging mobile technology to enhance financial services?



Ajmal: At Mastercard, we have long envisioned a digital economy that’s accessible to everyone, everywhere, and Africa is at the forefront of this vision. Significant Strides Taken In Expanding Access To Mobile Financial Services In Sub-Saharan Africa

Nestlé regards sustainability at the heart of its goals to protect the environment. 



World Sustainability Day was commemorated recently to serve as an annual reminder to address environmental issues and shift our focus towards reducing waste, preserving the planet, and fostering a sustainable future. This requires a commitment from big corporations to take a bold stance when it comes to sustainability.&nbsp;&nbsp;



That is why Nestlé has always put in place practical solutions to reduce waste – from production to packaging. At the heart of this transformation are circular principles, simple yet fundamental means of shifting their approach to recycling. Critically, at Nestlé, circularity comes alive in three sustainability pillars: Rethink, Reduce, and Repurpose. These principles are a practical roadmap for evolving operations towards more sustainable means of production.&nbsp;



The company’s commitment to sustainability is highlighted by its focus on Designed for Recycling (D4R) materials. This strategy ensures that packaging, like the new laminate material used in Nestlé Nespray sachets, can easily enter the recycling process, preventing more waste from ending up in landfills. The shift to D4R materials has already resulted in a 78-tonne reduction in packaging waste per year, demonstrating the significant impact that thoughtful design can have.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Nestlé&#8217;s brands are making great strides towards packaging Designed for Recycling. Each of these popular products are known for their distinctive qualities – KitKat&#8217;s famous finger chocolate wafer, Bar One&#8217;s layered caramel and malted nougat, Tex&#8217;s crispy chocolate-covered wafers, Aero&#8217;s bubbly texture, the biggest coffee brand in the world NESCAFÉ, household powdered milk products like Nestlé Nespray and Nestlé Klim, and the chocolate malt beverage Nestlé Milo – demonstrate this commitment. In addition, there are many practical ways in which consumers can rethink the way that they repurpose materials, such as empty NESCAFÉ jars. Beyond recycling, the jars can be used to store various dry goods; you can decorate your garden by using them as planters, they can be wrapped and used for putting thoughtful gifts inside, and you can even use them as a decorative piece to store your stationery in.&nbsp;



NESCAFÉ is a brand which stands out when it comes to sustainability from an environmental point of view. Not only are NESCAFÉ’s great tasting products accessible, but they are also responsibly sourced. In 2022, the brand launched its NESCAFÉ Plan 2030, which focuses on regenerative agriculture and greenhouse gas emission reduction. Building on 10 years&#8217; experience of the NESCAFÉ Plan 2030, Nestlé is accelerating its work to help tackle climate change and address social and economic challenges in the NESCAFÉ value chains.&nbsp;



Some of the packaging aligns with Nestlé&#8217;s broader goal of reducing its reliance on virgin plastic. Virgin plastic, made from new rather than recycled materials, significantly contributes to environmental degradation. Nestlé has already achieved an 8.1% reduction as of 2021. In 2023, the company integrated 30% recycled plastic into all shrink film used in its packaging, leading to a 190-tonne reduction in virgin plastic annually. These efforts are part of Nestlé&#8217;s commitment to reducing virgin plastic consumption by 33% by 2025, a goal that aligns with the company&#8217;s broader vision of environmental stewardship. Further to the above, Nestlé&#8217;s ambitious strides towards plastic neutrality stand out as a significant contribution to global environmental goals. As the world&#8217;s largest food and beverage company, the company is committed to reducing plastic waste and designing recyclable packaging, addressing the growing concerns over plastic pollution. By 2025, the company aims to have 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable and has already achieved notable milestones along this journey.&nbsp;



In line with its vision for a waste-free future, Nestlé aims to ensure that none of its packaging —particularly plastics — ends up in landfills, oceans, lakes, or rivers. Mark Helfrich, Packaging Engineering Manager for Nestlé East &amp; Southern Africa Region (ESAR), states, &#8220;We are committed to tackling plastic waste at every level, ensuring that our packaging does not contribute to environmental harm. By leveraging innovation and scale, we aim to deliver solutions that matter.&#8221;&nbsp;



South Africa&#8217;s plastic recycling landscape is also evolving, and Nestlé plays a key role. The South African Plastics Pact&#8217;s 2023 report shows that plastic waste is declining, with a <a href="https://www.saplasticspact.org.za/2022/12/29/sa-plastics-pact-2021-annual-report-published/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recycling</a> rate of 43.2% in 2020, including a 35.4% rate for plastic packaging. This progress is supported by a growing recycling industry that reduces pollution and provides employment for thousands of reclaimers nationwide. Nestlé&#8217;s efforts have contributed to this momentum by reducing plastic usage at a time when sustainability is more important than ever. In 2023, Nestlé reduced the amount of plastic used for pallet wrapping in its South African factories by 50%. By adopting new shrink film technology that maintains strength and tear resistance while using less material, the company reduced plastic packaging by 115 tonnes annually.&nbsp;



Innovation remains central to Nestlé&#8217;s efforts to tackle plastic pollution. The Fit-for-Purpose initiative optimizes packaging by reducing material thickness, size, and weight and minimises the company&#8217;s environmental footprint. A notable example of this is the 2022 lightweighting project, where Nestlé redesigned the plastic spoons included in infant formula cans for products like Nestlé Nan, Nestlé Nido, and Nestlé Lactogen. This redesign resulted in a 60% weight reduction, saving 93 tonnes of plastic annually.
