Behind The Firewall: The Quest For Digital Safety

Samuel Saba is the Chairman of Infinity Group, a real estate development group that is headquartered out of Dubai, with significant investments in Zanzibar, Tanzania.



The Infinity Group, which currently employs more than 1,000 people, internationally, has crossed a Gross Development Value (GDV) of $430 million with its existing pipeline of real estate projects.

Infinity Group, under Saba’s leadership, has sought to diversify its business interest outside of the Middle East, and into the East African market, particularly in Zanzibar, a country that has seen tremendous growth in international visitors – of over 182% in the last four years.



It has been attributed to the value for money found in Zanzibar, as well as significant investment from the government in public infrastructure, a friendly business environment, beautiful beaches, and a hospitable population.



To date, Infinity Group has launched several projects on the island, the largest of which is a mega-development in Nungwi called the Anantara Zanzibar Resort &amp; Residences, which is being developed by one of its subsidiaries, Infinity Developments. Anantara Zanzibar Resort &amp; Residences has a GDV of over $206 million, and has been attracting widespread international recognition, and investment from various demographics, particularly the Middle Eastern and European clientele.

“We are proud to be developing what is set to be the most luxurious resort on the island when we open our doors to visitors in 2027,” Saba said.



Infinity has also chosen to invest in cultural tourism and its preservation on the island by investing over $12,000,000 in the renovation, restoration, and preservation of various museums, gardens, and public spaces in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.



Construction for several of these projects have already taken place, and completion is expected by mid-year 2025. One of the projects located in Stone Town is known as the Old Fort.



The group has no plans of slowing down and, in a short amount of time, has the current title of being the largest private developer on the island, with an existing portfolio of about 9 projects. It will be exciting to see what other investments and initiatives are yet to come.



A wide variety of investors from all over the world have been flocking to invest in Zanzibar, and the future looks very bright for the island nation, known for its warm climate, and crystal blue beaches. Q. Empowerment seems to be a core value of Eva’s Coffee. Could you elaborate on the initiatives or programs you have in place to support and uplift other women in agriculture?

Empowerment is at the heart of everything we do at Eva’s Coffee. Supporting and uplifting women in agriculture is not just a value but a commitment that drives our initiatives and programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;



We provide training in sustainable farming techniques to help women produce high-quality coffee and access better yields and prices. Through partnerships with organizations like the United States African Development Foundation (USADF), International Trade Center (ITC), Afreximbank, and Absa Bank, we offer women farmers access to microloans, grants, and essential farming inputs, enabling them to expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods.&nbsp;



As a 3P company (Profit, Planet, People), we prioritize climate resilience and advocate for women’s inclusion in the coffee industry through platforms like the International Women’s Coffee Alliance Kenya Chapter. We also connect women to global markets, providing export readiness training and market linkages.&nbsp;



Health is another critical area we focus on because, as I always say, a sick farmer cannot deliver even a kilo of coffee. Through partnerships with Vectorgram Health, we’ve introduced Artificial Intelligence (AI) breast cancer detection and supported farmers through medical camps.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Through these initiatives, we are not only equipping women with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive but also creating a ripple effect of empowerment that strengthens communities and paves the way for a more inclusive and equitable agricultural sector.&nbsp;



Q.Agriculture accounts for approximately 21% of Africa’s GDP, and women make up 60-80% of agricultural labor. However, with the sector being largely informal, women are not able to earn decent living wages and often remain in poverty despite their contributions. What actions can be taken to promote women’s economic power in the agriculture sector?

To promote women’s economic power in agriculture, several actions need to be taken.&nbsp;&nbsp;



First, ensuring equal land rights and inheritance for women is critical, as land is a fundamental asset that provides security and leverage for sustainable investment. Access to finance and credit is equally important, allowing women to invest in their farms without the need for land as collateral.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Tailored training programs can enhance women’s agricultural skills and knowledge. Facilitating market access and value-addition opportunities can help women sell their produce at better prices, while policies that address gender disparities and promote women’s representation in decision-making are essential for long-term change. Investing in climate-resilient practices, modern technology, and support networks—such as childcare and healthcare—can further empower women by reducing the risks they face.&nbsp;



Q. Gender inequality and poor representation of women in decision-making roles remain a significant barrier to women&#8217;s economic power through agriculture. What are some of the drivers of inequality and what opportunities do you see for African countries to address these barriers, including through gender-sensitive policies?

I have witnessed firsthand how gender roles, limited mobility, and unequal access to resources hinder many women from fully participating in this critical sector. Institutional barriers, such as discriminatory laws, lack of representation in decision-making roles, and inadequate education and training, exacerbate these inequalities. Economic factors like wage gaps, limited access to credit, and unequal land ownership further prevent women from achieving economic independence.&nbsp;



To address these challenges, we need gender-sensitive policies that reform discriminatory laws, promote women’s land rights, and ensure equitable resource access. Capacity building through education, leadership training, and access to technology can empower women while improving access to credit and financial services and supporting entrepreneurship can boost their economic power. Fund allocators must intentionally address gender bottlenecks, such as the lack of land or vehicles as collateral. Advocacy and partnerships with governments, international organizations, and research institutions are also essential for driving systemic change.&nbsp;



By tackling these barriers and embracing these opportunities, we can create a more equitable and sustainable agricultural sector that uplifts women and promotes their economic independence, enabling them to contribute to the broader economy.&nbsp;



Q. What are your plans for Eva’s Coffee? How do you envision further supporting women in agriculture and continuing to create a positive impact through your work?

At Eva’s Coffee, we’re proud to be a local roaster and distributor, sourcing directly from women groups in coffee cooperatives and providing roasted coffee for the local market. Looking ahead, I envision Eva’s Coffee becoming a hub for coffee tourism through the creation of an Eco-Lodge. This lodge will offer tourists a unique ‘farm to cup’ experience, showcasing the journey of coffee while promoting our high-quality products.&nbsp;



Beyond tourism, the Eco-Lodge will also serve as a training center for farmers, with a special focus on empowering women and youth through good agricultural practices (GAP). This initiative aims to strengthen their expertise and create opportunities for economic growth. The Eco-Lodge is more than a business expansion—it’s a vision to institutionalize our impact, ensuring that Eva’s Coffee outlives its founder by building platforms to nurture the next generation of agricultural development champions.&nbsp;

Brewing Change And Empowering Women In Agriculture 

AB InBev moves into the second year of its Growing Retailers Innovatively Together (GRIT) program in Africa. Building on its initial success, in 2023, GRIT has expanded rapidly to seven African countries, now boasting over 6,500 trained retailers. The program aims to enhance entrepreneurial skills, stimulate business growth and create much-needed employment opportunities across the continent.



Increased investment in education fuels economic growth by equipping individuals with the skills needed to innovate, compete, and thrive in a dynamic market. By upskilling retailers, AB InBev empowers them to expand their businesses, enabling them to make meaningful contributions to their families and communities.



Emphasis for the training is placed on upskilling retail partners owned or run by women and the youth (above 18 years of age), as this demographic is the backbone of an economy.



Adu Rando, Managing Director for Nile Breweries in Uganda, says, “We strongly believe in driving and growing together with our partners, customers and consumers; as this is part of our culture. We need to invest time and energy in things we believe in, and we believe that we can only grow when our customers grow.”



“Very often we see that bar owners or shop owners have not had formal training, nor have they had formal education, so there is normally a gap in knowledge that we can help fill by running this program and the training sessions.”



David Davidson from Black Lion Bar in Teshie Lascala, Ghana had this to add: “I’ve been challenged by certain things that even as a manager of this place I don’t know. But as part of this GRIT program, I’ve been able to gain new skills and have now acquired this knowledge to be able to change my business. This will also help me to train my employees”.



The GRIT program is customized by three key pillars, namely growth, education and inclusion. The program’s distinctive features include:



Growth



B2B platform access: Retailers gain access toAB InBev’s BEES platform, one of the world’s largest business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce platforms, empowering more than 3.1 million SMEs in 20 countries with tools, technologies and training. The BEES platform is currently running in three of our African markets namely Tanzania, Uganda and most recently Ghana. Uganda BEES started a 3P Marketplace in cooperation with the Keshwala Group, adding over 50 non-beer SKU offerings to select regions of the country in year one.



Infrastructure support: Retailers receive essential infrastructure support, including electricity, Wi-Fi, sanitation and security where required.



Thais Cavinatto, Zambian Breweries Country Director says, “Retailers are the backbone of our business. Our success is tied to theirs, and we grow together. The GRIT program is designed to foster long-term partnerships by providing education, guidance, and the necessary resources for ongoing growth”.



Education



Business training: Tailored training in financial and stock management, marketing and sales, and responsible retailing.



Coaching and mentoring: A hybrid model of both in-person and online coaching and mentoring to support continuous entrepreneurial development.



Violet Zulu, a retailer from Bauleni, Zambia adds, “This is the first time I’ve attended this program and Zambian Breweries has taught me how to take care of my business, the finances, and my customers”.



Inclusion



Financial access: Participants are provided with access to bank accounts, insurance, credit, and cashless payment mechanisms.



Administrative support: Technical assistance with legislative compliance and harm-reduction guidelines.



Paul Lubuka, a bar owner in Uganda, says, “I really learned how to manage capital &#8211; and how to get capital and maintain stock, as well as how I can raise my capital in order to boost my business”.



Andrew Whiting, Vice President, Legal and Corporate Affairs at AB InBev, explains, “The name GRIT symbolizes our determination to work together to realize shared value with stakeholders. Achieving entrepreneurial development, business growth and sustainability for our retail partners requires grit and perseverance and ensures that AB InBev continues to create a future with more cheers.”



“Entrepreneurship is about supporting and uplifting small and medium-sized businesses across our value chain, from smallholder farmers to local retailers. Beyond mentorship, GRIT provides tangible resources like access to funding and cashless payment mechanisms. Strengthening our retailers strengthens their communities, enabling sustainable business growth across the continent,” he adds. &nbsp;



This year’s program has grown in terms of its engagement model, which was, at launch, available as an in classroom-only option and has now been enhanced with the offering of a hybrid training model.



Retailers can choose between in-person or online training via a GRIT digital app, which was launched in October 2024.



This makes it possible for more retailers to participate in the course and finish it at a time that works for them. This new model also aligns with AB InBev’s goal of embracing the digitalization journey.



“The empowerment program has been invaluable, showing me how to build strong relationships with my customers and select the right products to sell. I’ve also learned how to follow industry regulations and the importance of sourcing stock from reputable distributors,” says Kimberly Banda, a retailer from Matero, Zambia, another program participant.



Temitope Oguntokun, Legal and Corporate Affairs Director at International Breweries in Nigeria, adds, “To date we are very happy with the progress we are making with this initiative, which we piloted a year ago.”



“The essence of this program is to support our retailers as they are a major partner in our value chain. There has been positive feedback coming from our retailers who were trained in 2023 and 2024, and we plan to grow the program year-on-year to ensure greater impact in our communities.”



The GRIT program has been running from May, and, in October, we introduced the digital platform in seven of AB InBev’s African markets – Nigeria: International Breweries plc, Ghana: Accra Brewery plc, Zambia: Zambian Breweries Plc, Uganda: Nile Breweries Ltd, Tanzania: Tanzanian Breweries Limited, Mozambique: Cervejas de Mocambique (CDM) and Botswana: Kgalagadi Breweries Limited – with the aim of training all retailers in the organization’s supply chain.



Social-impact specialists will monitor the program’s KPIs and ongoing effects on communities and individuals.

The outcomes of COP29 in Baku painted a stark picture of the global energy transition and its role in driving development. While ambition remains high on paper, action lacks the momentum needed to meet the aspirations of developing countries.



As the world debated a $300 billion climate finance agreement, the reality is far more daunting—developing nations require over $1.3 trillion annually to achieve their decarbonization goals and economic development agendas.



This glaring gap is more than a financial issue; it reflects the waning models of donor-recipient dynamics and the lack of inclusivity in the global energy agenda.

A recent McKinsey research report highlights the disconnect between climate aspirations and actual implementation. The report shows how many nations and companies have set targets without outlining concrete plans to achieve them.



For instance, numerous green hydrogen projects have been announced, but few have progressed beyond the initial stages. This trend is not unique to hydrogen, it extends across various critical energy transition technologies. The challenge lies in translating ambitious goals into tangible actions, as delays and project cancellations pose substantial risks to the global climate agenda.



Amid this uncertainty, Saudi Arabia is stepping up, charting a new path that doesn’t rely on pledges but prioritizes practical solutions to address the energy transition and meet the development demands of growing economies.



One such channel is the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), which has been pivotal in financing critical infrastructure projects in Africa, ranging from education to energy. This includes transformative projects that have directly enhanced access to essential services and fostered economic development.



Meanwhile, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) has made substantial investments in Africa. Likewise, Saudi-based, ACWA Power is the world’s largest private water desalination company and a leader in green hydrogen. These investments encompass mining, energy and infrastructure, ensuring long-term benefits for local and growing economies.



“We understand that the energy transition is not a one-man show. Through Vision 2030 and platforms like the Future Minerals Forum, the premier global gathering for minerals, the Kingdom is reimagining how mineral-rich regions, long overlooked, can take center stage in the energy transition and harness their mineral-rich opportunities to grow their economies,” explains Khalid Al-Mudaifer,&nbsp;Vice-Minister for Mining Affairs, Saudi Arabia.



At the heart of this vision is the ‘Super Region’, which spans Africa, West Asia, and Central Asia. This region has a vast expanse of untapped mineral wealth. By fostering collaboration, de-risking investments, and building resilient supply chains, Saudi Arabia is proving that bold leadership can unlock shared prosperity.



The Kingdom is also leveraging its location, relationships, and, more importantly, investment power to bring the right stakeholders to Riyadh to discuss the future of the mineral industry at the Future Minerals Forum.



As an extension to conversations set to take place at the forum, the Ministerial Roundtable brings governments together with international organizations and industry representatives to identify and implement practical actions to create mineral value chains.



“The Super Region is an example of how partnerships and collaboration can scale investments in the entire value chain of critical minerals – from exploration to manufacturing – creating a foundation for shared prosperity and resilience,” Al-Mudaifer adds.



“The Future Minerals Forum initiative creates a framework for sustainable, inclusive growth. By aligning regional cooperation with local development goals, the Super Region ensures that investments in minerals and mining generate economic opportunities, build resilient supply chains, and accelerate the shift to clean energy.”



Strengthening supply chains and regional collaboration



The Kingdom’s mining and mineral strategy, which is aligned to the objectives of Vision 2030, is to strengthen supply chain resilience, ensuring that the Kingdom and its partners are well-positioned to meet global demand for critical minerals. By serving as a strategic commercial hub, Saudi Arabia facilitates the seamless movement of resources, technologies, and expertise across continents.



For that purpose, the Kingdom announced the National Minerals Program earlier this year, which aims to optimize mineral supply chains by encouraging local investment in global mineral assets to satisfy the Kingdom’s increased mineral demand. This demand is being driven by the massive ‘giga projects’, and its National Industrial Strategy, which aims to develop future industries in Saudi Arabia like automotive, defense, aviation and renewable energy.



In terms of the concrete steps Saudi Arabia is taking, Al-Mudaifer shares, “We are attracting $100 billion in mineral industries, by 2035, including lithium, copper, steel, and more. Coupled with a robust infrastructure of ports, railways, and industrial cities, Saudi Arabia offers unmatched opportunities for investors, providing access to over 3.5 billion consumers across the Super Region”.



To ensure a steady supply of critical minerals, the Kingdom has also created Manara Minerals, which has already made its first strategic investment. This proactive approach secures the resources needed to drive giga-projects while supporting global energy transition goals.



Moreover, the Future Minerals Forum’s Super Region encourages collaboration among governments, private sector players, and local communities, ensuring that mining projects not only extract value but also contribute to infrastructure, education, and capacity building in host countries.



A model for addressing the inequities exposed by COP29



The Super Region initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s overarching vision to create a sustainable, prosperous and globally connected future. By emphasizing economic diversification and regional cooperation, it offers a model for addressing the challenges exposed by COP29 and advancing the new energy ambitions at a global scale. It demonstrates how strategic investments can address the urgent development challenges of our time.



The initiative enables cooperation on maximizing the benefits from collective mineral endowments, by establishing minerals and metals value chains that have local communities at their heart, and ultimately increase the quality of lives around mining operations.



As Saudi Arabia prepares to host the fourth edition Future Minerals Forum and the Ministerial Roundtable in Riyadh, the Super Region will take center stage as a transformative initiative that redefines the role of mining in sustainable development. At the third edition, Ministerial Roundtable participants reinforced the message calling for increased financing to support supplier countries’ development of their minerals sectors, as well as downstream value addition.

After 17 successful years of hosting the event in South Africa, this was the first time the tournament was organized by ABN outside of South Africa. ABN Group Chairman Rakesh Wahi explained that the event was part of ABN&#8217;s broader strategy to bring businesses together through golf, fostering valuable networking opportunities.&nbsp;



“CNBC Africa was established in Rwanda nine years ago, and we have been sharing Rwanda’s development success story with the world. As business continues to grow, it’s important to bring the regional business community together — not just to discuss business, but also to connect through sporting activities. There’s no better way to do this than through golf. Kigali is the second city to host this event, and we plan to expand it further,” said Wahi.&nbsp;&nbsp;



The tournament drew more than 70 participants from leading companies in Rwanda, who teed off alongside Wahi and Denham Pons, CNBC Africa’s Head of East Africa. Among the key sponsors was Trinity Metals. It’s CEO, Geleta, highlighted the importance of participating in the tournament: “We’ve only been operating in Rwanda for two and a half years, and this event provides an opportunity to connect with our business partners and support the growth of the mining industry in Africa.”&nbsp;&nbsp;



Diane Mukunde of NCBA Bank Rwanda, another major sponsor of the day, emphasized how the tournament offered a unique opportunity to build closer relationships with clients, while MTN Rwanda’s Head of Enterprise Business, Didas Ndoli, pointed out the value of corporate engagement: “We’re pleased to partner with CNBC Africa for this golf event. It’s an excellent platform to engage with our VIP customers.”&nbsp;&nbsp;



Other sponsors of the event included I&amp;M Bank, SKOL Brewery and Kivu Noir, all contributing to the event&#8217;s success. The tournament, held in a four-ball format, saw 18 teams competing across the course’s 18 holes. Starting at 8AM, these executives-turned-semi-professional golfers battled the elements, sinking aces and eagles while navigating tricky bunker shots. Rwangombwa expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I’m looking forward to an enjoyable game, and of course, I hope to win something today.”&nbsp;



As the day progressed, players enjoyed refreshments at the halfway house, re-energizing for the rest of the competition. The RSE’s Rwabukumba enjoyed the mix of networking and sport, remarking, “Everyone wants to win, but I’m also enjoying meeting industry leaders in a relaxed environment.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The event concluded at 2PM, with teams submitting their scorecards and preparing for the gala awards ceremony at Kigali Serena Hotel. The dinner was attended by notable figures including Rwanda Development Board (RDB) CEO Francis Gatare, Rwanda’s former Ambassador to South Africa Vincent Karega, Rwanda&#8217;s Minister of State in charge of National Treasury Richard Tusabe, and I&amp;M Bank CEO Benjamin Mutimura.&nbsp;



In his welcome speech, CNBC Africa’s Pons thanked the participants and sponsors for their support and reiterated the ABN Group’s commitment to telling the East Africa story. Geleta also highlighted the reason behind his company’s sponsorship of the event: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase Rwanda’s mining potential and put it on the global map.”&nbsp;



In his keynote speech, RDB’s Gatare praised the ABN Group for organizing the event and promoting business in Rwanda: “It’s vital to have business leaders like Rakesh Wahi and the ABN Group encouraging the use of this remarkable golf course. Sports tourism is central to our strategy to grow Rwanda as a leading tourism destination.”&nbsp;



The night ended with the presentation of awards. Dries Grobler won the Longest Drive award, while James Mureithi took home the Nearest to the Pin prize. The team of Robert Bafakulera, Kenneth Murangira, Innocent Rutamu and Ras Tinyinondi emerged as group champions with a score of 80 points.&nbsp;

CrossBoundary Energy has secured a $140 million senior debt commitment from the Standard Bank Group on a fully underwritten basis.



The transaction between CrossBoundary Energy and the Standard Bank Group highlights the potential role of commercial funders in supporting the adoption of renewable energy solutions by businesses across Africa.



The financing is being undertaken as a first tranche within a broader mandate with the Standard Bank Group, which has been appointed to lead and arrange up to $300 million senior debt to support the scaling of CrossBoundary Energy’s renewable energy portfolio serving Commercial and Industrial (C&amp;I) clients across Africa.



CrossBoundary Energy was supported by Cygnum Capital acting as exclusive financial adviser, and by Bracewell (U.K.) LLP as borrower’s counsel. Trinity International LLP acted as lenders’ counsel on the transaction.



In Africa, access to reliable and affordable power is one of the largest impediments to business growth. While service providers can solve this, access to finance remains an immense barrier to companies accessing that power. The IEA estimates that the energy transition <a href="https://www.iea.org/reports/scaling-up-private-finance-for-clean-energy-in-emerging-and-developing-economies/executive-summary">will require $160 billion annual </a>investment between 2026—2030 to align with climate goals, the bulk of which will come from the private sector.
